Abstract

In order to assess the efficiency of direct seeding in afforestation of previous agricultural lands, we conducted an experiment testing two main factors: tree species and surrounding vegetation composition (cover plants). Three seed mixtures were prepared corresponding to tree species of 3 succession stages after field abandonment. Tree emergence and growth, vegetation composition time-course, soil water content, soil and air temperatures and transmitted light were recorded all along the 2003 and 2004 seasons
