Energy efficiency is one of the maingoals of WSNs due to that sensor nodes are usually batterypowered, and the battery of sensor is not always rechargeable,particularly when the network operates in inhospitable orhostile environments.This special issue on recent advances inenergy-efficientWSNs is intended to provide a forum for pre-senting, exchanging, and discussing themost recent advancesin different aspects of the energy efficiency to provide longlifetime for WSNs with emerging technologies.Reducing energy consumption is a challengewhendesign-ing a media access control (MAC) protocol for WSNs. Amajor source of energy consumption in a WSN is the idlelisteningmode inwhich a node remains awake for a long timewhen no actual data transmission is required by the network.The paper “Low overheadMACprotocol for low data rate wire-less sensor networks” proposes an energy-efficient, multihopMAC protocol for low data rate sensor networks called LO-MAC. It uses both duty cycling and multihop forwardingfrom the routing-enhancedMACprotocol (RMAC) to reduceidle listening and sleep latency, respectively. Moreover, LO-MAC exploits common characteristics of wireless commu-nications to build several lightweight energy saving mecha-nisms.Multichannel communication protocols have been devel-oped to alleviate the effects of interference and consequentlyimprove the network performance in WSNs requiring highbandwidth. In the paper “Adaptive learning based schedulingin multichannel protocol for energy-efficient data-gatheringwireless sensor networks,” the authors propose a contention-free multichannel protocol to maximize network throughputwhile ensuring energy-efficient operation. Arguing that rout-ing decisions influence to a large extent the network through-put, they formulate route selection and transmission schedul-ing as a joint problem and propose a reinforcement-learning-based scheduling algorithm to solve it in a distributed man-ner.InWSNs, clustering is widely used to support an effectivemechanism in many applications, including environmentmonitoring, because it promises efficient energy consump-tion for inexpensive battery-operated sensors. In the paper“Clustering with one-time setup for reduced energy consump-tion and prolonged lifetime in wireless sensor networks,” theauthors present a novel energy-efficient clustering schemecalled clustering with one-time setup which removes thecluster reforming process required at every round after thefirst round. By removing the cluster reforming process, thenumber of transmissions per round can be decreased accord-ingly.Clustering method for data aggregation in WSNs hasattracted great attention for its high efficiency. The paper“Energy-balanced separating algorithm for cluster-based dataaggregation in wireless sensor networks” focuses on the prob-lem of unbalanced energy dissipation when employing themultihop routing in a cluster-based WSNs. Considering therelaying load undertaken by each cluster, they use the net-work topology and energy consumption to calculate a clusterradius for obtaining the intercluster energy balancing.In the paper “Energy-efficient self-organized clusteringwith splitting and merging for wireless sensor networks,”2 International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networksthe authors propose an energy-efficient self-organized clus-tering model with splitting and merging (EECSM), whichperforms clustering and then splits and merges clusters forenergy-efficient cluster-based routing. It uses information ofthe energy state of sensor nodes, in order to reduce energyconsumption and maintain load balance. In addition, theyhave shown the validity of splitting and merging of clusters,and then compare the performance of the proposed EECSMwith that of a well-known cluster-based self-organizationrouting protocol for WSNs.The scarcity of spectrum has become a major bottleneckof the development of the next generation wireless communi-cation system. Cognitive radio (CR), which allows unlicensedor secondary users (SUs) to share the spectrum with licensedor primary users (Pus), shows great promise to enhance thespectrum utilization efficiency. In the paper “Repeated game-inspired spectrum sharing for clustering cognitive ad hoc net-works,” the authors modeled the spectrum sharing problemamong multiple SUs as a repeated game. Using the gametheory, which has been widely used in designing efficientspectrum sharing, the SUs can iteratively adapt their strate-gies in terms of requested spectrum size. They analyzed con-vergence condition under which the total rate revenue of SUsis maximized and the fairness of spectrum sharing. With theproposed clustering procedure and repeated game-inspiredmodel for SUs, a significant performance improvement isachieved compared to other similar spectrum sharing algo-rithms.Recently, mobility is an important factor in the designof a routing protocol for WSNs. In the paper “A mobility-aware efficient routing scheme for mobile sensor networks,” theauthors propose a mobility-aware efficient routing, in whichsensor nodes make use of mobile information to select themost appropriate routing behavior. The proposed methodintegrates proactive and reactive routing components effi-ciently using a sink cluster that consists of underlying multi-ple static or slow sensor nodes.The cluster provides the stablepaths between less mobile entities efficiently.In the current research inclination, hiring of biologicalsolutions to solve and optimize different aspects of artificialsystem’s problems has shaped into an important field withthe name of bioinspired computing. In the paper “Intelligentoptimization of wireless sensor networks through bio-inspiredcomputing: survey and future directions,” the authors haveelaborated the importance of bio-inspired algorithms for theoptimal solutions of nonbiological systems. The paper leadsus to differentiate between various optimization problemsexisting in WSNs collectively showing that hybrid and non-hybrid algorithms can efficiently optimize the problems inWSNs.As the developments of various sensor networks, sometypes of sensors are required to be capable of processingmassdata. For example, image sensor nodes take photos usingcameras and the images are stored and processed. The paper“Providing virtual memory support for sensor networks withmass data processing” deals with supporting virtual memoryfor sensor nodes which capture and process mass data. Usingthe optimizing techniques for reducing VM overheads suchas cache management, address translation, and secondarystorage accessing, the interesting experiments show that dataprocessing using virtual memory can be significantly moreenergy-efficient than data processing using rich-resourcesensor nodes.The vehicular communication is one of vehicular ad hocnetworks (VANETs) research areas usingWSNs. In the paper“An energy-efficient broadcast MAC protocol for hybrid vehic-ular networks,” the authors have proposed an energy-efficientmultihop relay broadcast MAC protocol, which is designedfor roadside units downloading service in roadside-vehicularcommunication systems.Thepaper focuses on theMAC layerprotocol in order to reduce the routing overhead of the fre-quent topology changes according to a vehicle’s movementcharacteristics. It employs a rebroadcastmechanism based ona vehicle’s velocity, distance, and angle from a nearby vehiclefor collision-free communication.Body sensor networks (BSNs) carry heterogeneous traffictypes having diverse QoS requirements, such as delay, reli-ability, and throughput. In the paper “Traffic priority andload adaptive MAC protocol for QoS provisioning in bodysensor networks,” the authors proposed a MAC protocol forQoS provisioning in BSNs and analyzed the effect of priori-tizing data packets and dynamically allocating DTS with theconsideration of priority and traffic load in the super framestructure of IEEE 802.15.4. The experiments show that theproposed MAC protocol can achieve higher QoS require-ments with low power consumption than the state-of-the-artprotocols.The smart grid is a future power system which essentiallyemploys WSNs for its application such as wireless meterreading and remote system monitoring. The power manage-ment for actuator gets more important, as many standardprotocols such as Zigbee have already achieved significantimprovement in sensor network part. The paper “Power loaddistribution for wireless sensor and actuator networks in smartgrid buildings” designed an actuator operation schedulercapable of reducing peak load in power consumption ofactuator tasks.Themost interesting part of the paper is takingadvantage of genetic algorithms. Based on the load profilespecification and the taskmodel consisting of nonpreemptiveand preemptive tasks, each scheduler is encoded into a chro-mosome, which is an integer-valued vector. The fitness func-tion evaluates the schedule quality by estimating the load ofthe peaking slot.
