130A study on Masamichi Royama’s denitions of politics and the nation －e period from prewar to postwar－Jizhou WANGGraduate School of Social Sciences, Waseda UniversityThis paper examines the political science of Masamichi Royama by focusing on his definitions of politics and the nation. In the 1920s, Royama used neo-Kantianism and pluralism to sought the independence of political science from the national law. However, when the absoluteness of the nation was refuted, the problems regarding class and ethnicity that had traditionally been hidden beneath the nation appeared. In response to the issue of political divisions, Royama used the co-organic theory, restructured the definition of politics and the nation, and emphasized the function of the nation for politically unity. Soon after, when the second Sino-Japanese War broke out, Royama insisted on the national cooperation doctrine and actively participated in the war. After the war, Royama and Masao Maruyama had a dispute about the reconstruction of the political science. In 1952, when the political science principle was introduced, Royama redefined politics and the nation, thus reflecting the tradi-tional view of a sociological nation and functional politics.
