no nikki, as part of the “adopted daughter’s courtship” entry, there is an episode in which Michitsuna brings back from T?nori’s house what the text calls an “onna-e” picture, on which Michit-suna no Haha writes a poem before sending it back.?The majority of the previous research on this entry has either sought to determine the exact meaning of the term “onna-e” (this being the earliest known example of its use), or used the episode to justify readings of the “adopted daughter’s courtship” entry as elucidating the relationship between Michitsuna no Haha and Kaneie. In this arti-cle, however, moving away from attempts to understand the mind of the diary’s author, I instead carefully analyze this episode’s language to determine the character of the larger entry in which it is contained.?More concretely, by reexamining, in particular, the composition of the picture (a widower writing a letter, deep in thought), and the language of the poem written on the picture, I conclude that this episode can be characterized as a microcosm of the “adopted daughter’s courtship” entry.?In addition, building on my previous studies of the language used in the “adopted daughter’s courtship” entry, I also consider the character of the third volume as a whole, showing that it is, indeed, possible to discover a certain degree of mutual organic connection between the various episodes, or episode groups, that it contains.
