T h u s ,  L D P C  d e c o d e r  o f  w i r e l e s s  c o m mu n i c a t i o n  sy s t e ms  s h o u l d  d e l i v e r  b o t h  t h e  c a p ab i l i t y  o f  h i g h  t h r o u g h p u t  a n d  h i g h  e n e rg y  e f f i c i e n cy.  F o r  t h i s  p u r p o s e ,  f a s t  c o n v e rg e n t  d e co d i n g  a l g o r i t h m a n d  h i g h l y  p a r a l l e l  a r c h i t e c t u r e  a r e  t h e  mo s t  e f f i c i e n t  a p p r o a ch e s .  I n  t h e  a l g o r i t h m l e v e l ,  c u r r e n t l y  t h e  Tu r b o - d e c o d i n g  M e s s a g e - P a s s i n g  ( T D M P,  a l s o  c a l l e d  t h e  l ay e r e d  d e c o d i n g )  a l g o r i t h m h a s  s h o w n  i t s  s i g n i f i c a n c e  w h i c h  a c h i ev e s  a b o u t  t w o  t i me s  f a s t e r  c o n v e rg i n g  s p e e d  c o mp a r e d  w i t h  t h e  c o n v e n t i o n a l  Tw o - P h a s e  M e s s a g e - P a s s i n g  ( T P M P,  a l s o  c a l l ed  f l o o d i n g )  a l g o r i t h m f o r  Q C - L D P C  c o d e s .  B a s e d  o n  t h i s  T D M P a l g o r i t h m,  t h e  p a r t i a l  p a r a l l e l  a r c h i t e c t u r e  r e a l i z e s  b a l a n c e  b e t w e e n  h i g h  t h r o u g h p u t  a n d  r e a s o n a b l e  h a r d w a r e  c o s t .  I n  t h e  a r c h i t e c t u r e  l e v e l ,  g en e r a l l y  t h e  d e co d i n g  p r o c e s s  o f  T D M P a l g o r i t h m  i s  c a r r y i n g  o u t  l ay e r  b y  l ay e r.  Wi t h i n  e a c h  l a y e r,  d i f f e r e n t  d e s i g n s  w i t h  t h e  c o r r e s p o n d i n g  s c h e d u l i n g  g i v e  d i f f e r e n t  p a r t i a l  p a r a l l e l  a r c h i t e c t u r e s .  T h e  o r i g i n a l  a r c h i t e c t u r e  p r o c e s s e s  t h e  n o n z e r o  s u b - b l o c k s  b l o ck  b y  b l o ck .  A s  a  r e s u l t ,  t h e  c l o c k  cy c l e  n u mb e r  o f  o n e  i t e r a t i o n  i s  ap p r o x i m a t e l y  e q u a l  t o  t h e  n o n z e r o  s u b  m a t r i x  n u mb e r  o f  p a r i t y  ch e c k  ma t r i x  ( P C M ) .  T h e  s t a t e - o f - a r t  d e s i g n  b y  B o  i n  V L S I  S y m p o s i u m 2 0 1 0  u s e s  t w o  s e t s  o f  p ro c e s s i n g  u n i t s  t o  i mp r o v e  t h e  p a r a l l e l i s m  a n d  p r o c e s s e s  t wo  n o n z e r o  s u b - b l o ck s  i n  o n e  c l o c k  cy c l e .  H o w e v e r,  i t  d o e s  n o t  b r i n g  d o u b l e  p a r a l l e l i s m  g a i n  b e c a u s e  o f  t h e  d a t a  c o n f l i c t i n g  p r o b l e m .  B y  u t i l i z i n g  3 t h e  n o n z e r o  s u b - m a t r i x  r e o r d e r i n g  a n d  c o mp l e x  b y p a s s  c o n t r o l l i n g  s c h e me ,  i t  c a n  p a r t i a l l y  s o l v e  t h e  d a t a  c o n f l i c t i n g  p r o b l em.  T h e r e f o r e ,  t w o  n o v e l  a r c h i t e c t u r e s  f o r  T D M P a l g o r i t h m a r e  p r o p o s e d  i n  t h i s  d i s s e r t a t i o n  t o  o v e r c o me  t h i s  p r e t t y  p a s s  s i t u a t i o n . T h e  P C M  i n  Q C - L D P C  co d e s  i s  co mp o s e d  o f  s e v e r a l  cy c l i c  s h i f t  su b - ma t r i c e s  wh i c h  sp e c i f y  t h e  i n t e r c o n n e c t i o n  b e t w e e n  t h e  v a r i a b l e  n o d e s  an d  c h e c k  n o d e s .  S i n c e  mo d e r n  w i r e l e s s  c o m mu n i c a t i o n  sy s t e m s  p r o v i d e  mu l t i p l e  c o d e  r a t e s  a n d  c o d e  l en g t h s  i n  o r d e r  t o  a d ap t  v a r i o u s  e n v i r o n me n t s ,  t h e  P C M s  d e f i n e d  i n  t h e s e  sy s t e ms  c o n t a i n  d i f f e r e n t  s i z e s  o f  s u b - m a t r i c e s .  A s  a  r e s u l t ,  t h e  p e r mu t a t i o n  n e t w o r k  i n  t h e  r e c o n f i g u r a b l e  L D P C  d e co d e r  n e e d s  t o  p r o v i d e  cy c l i c  s h i f t  a b i l i t y  f o r  mu l t i p l e  i n p u t  n u m b e r s  ( I N )  a n d  s h i f t  n u m b e r s  ( S N ) .  G en e r a l l y,  l o g a r i t h m b a r r e l  sh i f t e r  i s  a  n a t u r a l  ap p r o a c h  f o r  cy c l i c  s h i f t .  H o w e v e r,  i t  i s  h a r d  t o  a c c o m mo d a t e  p a r a l l e l  p e r mu t a t i o n  a n d  v a r i o u s  I N ,  e s p e c i a l l y  t h e  I N  wh i c h  i s  n o t  p o w e r  o f  2 .  S o me  o t h e r  ap p r o a c h e s  b a s e d  o n  B e n e s  n e t w o r k  w h i c h  a r e  c o mp o s e d  o f  s e v e r a l  s t a g e s  o f  c r o s s - b a r  s w i t c h  u n i t s ,  c o u l d  p r o v i d e  mu l t i p l e  t r an s mi s s i o n  p a t h s .  D e d i c a t e d  l o o k  u p  t ab l e  ( L U T )  o r  c o n t r o l  s i g n a l  g e n e r a t o r s  a r e  d e s i g n e d  t o  c o n t r o l  a l l  t h e  s w i t ch  u n i t s  a n d  r e a l i z e  t h e  d e s i r e d  p e r mu t a t i o n .  H o w e v e r,  t h e  a p p r o a ch e s  b a s e d  o n  t h e  B en e s  n e t wo r k  c a n n o t  a v o i d  t h e  l a t en cy  p r o b l e m n o t  o n l y  b e c a u s e  t h e  n u mb e r  o f  s t a g e s  i s  l a rg e  b u t  a l s o  t h e  c o n t r o l  s i g n a l s  a r e  g e n e r a t e d  s t a g e  b y  s t ag e . A s  a  co n s e q u e n c e ,  i t  p r e s e n t s  t h e  a r ch i t e c t u r e  o f  g en e r i c  p e r mu t a t i o n  n e t w o r k  ( G P N ) ,  w h i ch  i s  c a p a b l e  o f  co n s t r u c t i n g  r e q u i r e d  p e r mu t a t i o n  n e t wo r k  f o r  a n y  g i v e n  ap p l i c a t i o n  w i t h  e f f i c i e n t  c o n t r o l  s i g n a l  g en e r a t i n g  a l g o r i t h m  a n d  h i g h  p a r a l l e l i s m .  C o mp a r e d  w i t h  t h e  d e s i g n  b y  C .  H .  L i u  i n  I S C A S  2 0 0 8 ,  i t  r e d u c e s  2 6 %  h a r d w a r e  c o s t  f o r  o n e  g r o u p  p e r mu t a t i o n  an d  5 1 % h a r d w a r e  c o s t  f o r  p a r a l l e l  p e r mu t a t i o n .  F o r  W L A N  s t an d a r d ,  i t  s a v e s  4 0 . 4 %  h a r d w a r e  c o s t  f u r t h e r mo r e  an d  i mp r o v e  3 3 . 3 %  t i mi n g  p e r f o r ma n c e . C o mp a r e d  w i t h  t h e  p r e v i o u s  d e s i g n s ,  t h i s  a r c h i t e c t u r e  ch a n g e s  t h e  b l o c k  b y  b l o c k  s c h ed u l i n g  o f  T D M P a l g o r i t h m,  w h i c h  a c h i ev e s  h i g h e r  p a r a l l e l i s m .
