Abstract
Bacteria lack the cytoskeleton and motors of eukaryotic cells, and their cytoplasm has been considered to be purely fluid. New data show that bacterial cytoplasm can solidify to resemble a soft glass, unless enzymatic activity creates motions to fluidize it. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd
