Ephemeral art and celebrations in the liturgical calendar in Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina): The mise-en-scene of domestic altars in San Santiago and Santa Ana’s celebrations

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the domestic altars displayed during the festive events of San Santiago and Santa Ana in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina), considering them as an ephemeral art dispositives. We will consider the way in which different materialities and visualities are put together, removed or redirected and displayed in the domestic altar, as well as how they are manipulated by the faithful during the course of the event to finally be dismantled, desarticulated, thrown away and/or kept for the next festive event. Finally, we intend to analyze the networks established between the images and the social actors based on the particular production, the use of the altars, the use of space and the performativepractices foreseen by the dispositive
