Description of the femur of Protomegalonyx chasicoensis Scillato-Yané (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Megalonychidae) from the arroyo Chasicó Formation (Late Miocene): systematic consideration on the sloths of chasicóan age

Abstract

Se realiza la descripción del fémur del perezoso Protomegalonyx chasicoenis Scillato-Yané sobre la base de un fémur derecho completo (MMP M 478) procedente de la Formación Arroyo Chasicó (Mioceno tardío), en el sudoeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Protomegalonyx chasicoensis se caracteriza por los siguientes caracteres: tamaño menor que Protomegalonyx doellojuradoi Kraglievich y Protomegalonyx praecursor Kraglievich; fovea capitis totalmente incluida en la cabeza femoral; trocánter mayor poco desarrollado; tercer trocánter estrecho y lateralmente proyectado y, al igual que P. doellojuradoi y P. praecursor, facetas articulares distales separadas y epicóndilos proyectados. Los perezosos presentes en la mencionada unidad están representados por cinco especies: los Nothrotheriidae Xyophorus bondesioi Scillato-Yané y Chasicobradys intermedius Scillato-Yané, Carlini y Vizcaíno; Anisodontherium halmyronomum (Cabrera) (Megatheriidae, Megatheriinae); el Octomylodontinae Octomylodon robertoscagliai Scillato-Yané y P. chasicoensis. Protomegalonyx Kraglievich y Octomylodon Ameghino son citados para el "conglomerado osífero" (Mioceno tardío) de la provincia de Entre Ríos. Chasicobradys intermedius es muy similar a Neohapalops rothi Kraglievich procedente de la mencionada unidad entrerriana, por lo tanto es probable que sea su sinónimo junior. Esto sugiere una relación más cercana entre la fauna de perezosos hallada en la Formación Arroyo Chasicó y aquélla presente en el "conglomerado osífero" que la sugerida en trabajos previos.he description of the femur of the sloth Protomegalonyx chasicoensis Scillato-Yané is based on a right complete femur (MMP M 478) from the Arroyo Chasicó Formation (late Miocene) in the Southwest of Buenos Aires Province. Protomegalonyx chasicoensis is characterized by smaller size than Protomegalonyx doellojuradoi Kraglievich and Protomegalonyx praecursor Kraglievich; fovea capitis within the femoral head; greater trochanter less developed; third trochanter slender and projected; as in P. doellojuradoi and P. praecursor, distal facets separated and epicondyles projected. The sloths present in the above mentioned unit are represented by five species: the Nothrotheriidae Xyophorus bondesioi Scillato-Yané and Chasicobradys intermedius Scillato-Yané, Carlini and Vizcaíno; Anisodontherium halmyronomum (Cabrera) (Megatheriidae, Megatheriinae); the Octomylodontinae Octomylodon robertoscagliai Scillato-Yané, and P. chasicoensis. Protomegalonyx Kraglievich and Octomylodon Ameghino are recorded from the "conglomerado osífero" (late Miocene) of Entre Ríos Province. Chasicobradys intermedius is very similar to Neohapalops rothi Kraglievich from the mentioned unit of Entre Ríos Province, and is probably its junior synonym.
