A partir de los usos y definiciones de términos como “bárbaro” y “barbarie” en la Encyclopédie, el artículo propone una exploración de las ideas ilustradas al respecto, tanto en Francia como fuera de ella. Por un lado, se rastrean correspondencias y divergencias entre la obra de Diderot y D’Alembert y otros textos precedentes y contemporáneos, lo que hecha luz sobre el origen de algunas de esas ideas. Por el otro, se registran los debates centrales al respecto, que incluyen el tema de la expansión planetaria europea y la crítica ilustrada del colonialismo, con el objetivo de reconstruir la complejidad de las nociones referidas, excesivamente simplificadas por una parte de la historiografía reciente.The article focuses on the uses and definitions of terms like “barbarian” and “barbarity” in the Encyclopédie, in order to explore ideas regarding those subjects during the Enlightenment, both inside and outside France. On the one hand, the text traces similarities and divergences between Diderot and D’Alembert’s opus and other writings, thus showing the origins of some of these ideas. On the other hand, the study of some debates on that theme, including the European global expansion and the enlightened criticism of imperialism, shows the complexity of the aforementioned ideas, which have been excessively simplified by part of contemporary historiography.Fil: Kwiatkowski, Nicolás.
