This feature appears to remove all the significant problems of earlier models, and suggests that the main aspect of the self-trapped excitons are now satisfactorily understood. Dr M N Kabler has commented in a private communication that Dr R T Williams' data for NaCl preclude a B,, level with an Alg-B3" splitting above about 0.4 eV, whereas our results ($4.1) indicate around 0.8 eV. One possible explana- tion is that the local lattice geometry assumed (8 2.1) is in need of improvement. 2522
