Rescue excavations of the site AN 3 Donji Miholjac – Mlaka/trafostanica on Donji Miholjac southern beltway route in 2015

Abstract

In March and April 2015, the Institute of Archaeology conducted rescue archaeological excavations of the AN 3 Donji Miholjac – Mlaka/trafostanica site on Donji Miholjac southern bypass route. Site is situated in the lower ground near the southeast peripheral part of town. The remains of peripheral early Bronze Age and late La Tène/early Roman period settlements were found. Prehistoric finds from two larger refuse pits situated in the central and eastern part of the excavated area belong to the early Bronze Age Vinkovci culture. Two refuse pits situated in the western part of the excavated area yielded finds from late La Tène and early Roman period (the end of the 1st c. AD). For the large amount of post holes and smaller pits, whose concentration increases towards the east part of the excavated area, it is not possible to determine a specific period. Archaeological finds and the configuration of the terrain indicate the presence of Prehistoric and late La Tène/early Roman settlements on the higher ground north of the excavated area which covered only the peripheral part of both settlements
