A study performed in 2019 foundthat solid dosage drugs, i.e tablet or pill form, have thelongest shelf life when compared to liquid dosage forms. 3 R X  D R U G S  L A S T  L O N G E R  I N  I D E A LS T O R A G E  C O N D I T I O N S    The FDA Shelf Life extension program (SLEP) has found that 88%of 122 different drugs stored under ideal conditions should havetheir expiration dates extended more than 1 year, with an averageextension of 66 months, and a maximum extension of 278 months. 4 P H A R M A C E U T I C A L  M A N U F A C T U R E R SB E N E F I T  F R O M  S H O R T  E X P I R Y  D A T E SHospitals, governments, and pharmacies keep stockpilesof drugs for emergency use and as supplies for sales.There are financial benefits for pharmaceuticalcompanies if these stockpiles must be replenishedfrequently. This is why expiration dates should beindependently verified by third-party sources. Disposalof still viable medications for the financial gain ofpharmaceutical conglomerates, while some countries gowithout access to medications, is immoral andunacceptable.C A L L  T O  A C T I O N  When stored in appropriate conditions, most pharmaceuticaldrugs are safe to use for at least one year longer than theirprovided expiration date. Expired drugs often have diminishedfunction but over-the-counter medications rarely have anydeleterious effects. New legislation needs to be passed that requirespharmaceutical companies to provide expiration dates whichreflect the drugs function and stability, rather than theguarantees of the company. A recommended solution to thisissue could be to set a preliminary expiration date and updatethem based on results of ongoing long term trials. The expiration date is the final date that that themanufacturer guarantees the full potency and safety of amedication. A medication's expiration date assures that thedrug has not lost its potency until the stated date.  However, does this mean that the drug has a decrease in itsefficacy and is dangerous? C U R R E N T  L E G I S L A T I O N  I SO U T D A T E DA law passed in 1979 is currently what mandates that drugexpiry dates be put on all medications. However, the datesare simply the time period that the MANUFACTURER canguarantee potency.
