In this study we analyse the perception of the sense of coherence, of the psychological
wellbeing, of the quality of life, of the quality of the family relations and the relation between
such variables, in the individuals that experienced a haemato-oncologic disease.
In this sense it was outlined a quantitative, exploratory, transversal and co-relational
investigation. The data gathering, from a sample of 101 individuals in situation of remission
of a haemato-oncological disease, was made through a research protocol, that included the
social-biographical questionnaire, the coherence sense questionnaire - Questionnaire of
Orientation for Living (QOL), the psychological wellbeing questionnaire (PWQ), the quality
of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30 - version 3) and the family relations questionnaire
(FRQ). The data gathering was made in the External Consult of the Clinical Haematology of
the University of Coimbra Hospitals.
The results obtained allow us to realise that the subjects who lived a haemato-oncologic
disease present, generally, values of global coherence sense, of evaluation and
expectations about the reality and of perception of positive organisation and coherence. We
realise, also, that these subjects present values, of global SCO and of each one of the
dimensions, similar in the variables sex, age, marital status, profession, cohabitants, existence
of descendants, time of transplant and time of remission; and different values in the variables
of teaching level attended, subjection to bone marrow transplant and diagnosis.
As to the psychological wellbeing, we saw that, generally, our sample presents
positive values of psychological functioning. On the other hand, we saw that it presents
similar values of global PW and of each one of the variables sex, subjection to bone marrow
transplant and remission time. However, in the variables age, marital status, teaching level attended, profession, cohabitants, existence of descendants and diagnosis, they present value
differences in the global PW and/or in at least one of its dimensions.
As to the quality of life, we found similar values in the variables sex, cohabitants,
subjection to bone marrow transplant and diagnosis. On the other hand, the subjects of our
sample present different values in at least one of the dimensions that evaluate the quality of
life, in the variables sex, marital status, teaching level attended, profession, existence of
descendants, time of transplant and remission time.
We also saw that, generally, the family relational climate of the participants in our
study constitutes a resource that may contribute for lower levels of stress and use of more
fitted strategies, by dealing with the questions related to the previous situation of cancer.
In what concerns the relation between the coherence sense, the psychological
wellbeing and the quality of life, we can state that, in general, the subjects of our sample
present positive correlations between: the coherence sense and the psychological wellbeing,
the coherence sense and the quality of life, and the psychological wellbeing and the quality of
life
