Krause11GSI, Darmstadt, GermanyIntroductionThe FAIR accelerator control system is currently be-ing developed and the first prototype will be tested atCRYRING. The core parts are developed in close collab-oration with CERN, Geneva, and the current focus lies ontheir enhancement in order to fully support the demand-ing requirements for FAIR. Significant progress could beachieved in the basic major frameworks: LSA for settingsgeneration, CMW/RDA for communication and FESA forfront-end software. Besides these activities, work started tosupport the upcoming commissioning of CRYRING. Thisreport summarizes the developments during the year 2013.FESA FrameworkSoftware for the Front-End equipment control computerwill be developed using the FESA (Front-End SoftwareArchitecture) framework [1], which was originally estab-lished by CERN. In a collaboration between CERN andGSI a complete redesign of the framework has started acouple of years ago. The new version, FESA-3, is nowcompleted to be used in a productive environment. Theclasses for the test-operation of the proton linac ion sourcewere developed with FESA-3 at GSI.The new FESA-3 framework provides site-specific ex-tensions to adapt and enhance the framework to the needsof the contributing institutes. As part of the adaptation, aset of GSI specific properties was defined and a preliminaryconnection to the future GSI timing system was integrated.Not part of FESA, but tightly integrated, is theCERN network communication CMW/RDA (CommonMiddleWare / Remote Device Access) framework. Theframework, originally based on CORBA, is reworked usingZeroMQ for internal communication. GSI joined the devel-opment in 2013 to collaborate in all main parts. The newversion is now stable and ready to be integrated in FESA-3.LSA FrameworkAs basis for the settings management framework for theFAIR accelerator control system, the CERN LSA (LHCSoftware Architecture) framework [2] is used. Since 2007,a collaboration with CERN has been set up and the frame-work is being enhanced to support FAIR operations.This year, the splitting of the framework componentsinto generic functionality and institute specific parts was fi-nalized in cooperation with CERN. A major refactoring ofthe framework took place during the long shutdown (LS1at CERN) to achieve a clean and state of the art frame-work, following modern software architecture principles.Institute specific components were refactored according tothese changes.Concepts for enhancing the LSA framework to supportflexible beam operations for FAIR have been worked outand first development started. This will enable the frame-work to support scheduling of parallel beams and the coher-ent calculation of machine settings throughout the facility.To aid the machine modeling for CRYRING [3] and forfuture machines, tool development started to allow moreefficient modification of the accelerator models present inLSA for new accelerators.Other ActivitiesIn addition to framework developments, first applicationdevelopment has started to support the upcoming commis-sioning of CRYRING in 2014. A new Device Control pro-gram is being developed as part of the new FAIR accelera-tor control system for device diagnosis and exploitation.A small packaged version of the FAIR control systemwas developed that will be used at CEA Saclay for commis-siong and test operation of the FAIR proton source. It in-cludes FESA classes for controlling the equipment as wellas an application to control and monitor the proton source.This application will be the basis for a general source con-trol program for FAIR.The names of the existing GSI devices were enhancedto achieve a common naming schema for GSI and FAIRdevices. These changes were implemented in the presentcontrol system as a precondition for integration with thefuture FAIR control sytem.OutlookFor 2014, the main focus of the control system softwaredevelopment will be the commissioning and operation ofthe CRYRING, which will be used as test bed for the newcontrol system for FAIR.References[1] A.
