While it would be impossible to include them all here, we’d like to highlight some for you.New Director of  Deaf Education Studies:  We are happy to welcome Heather Hayes, Ph.D., as the new Director of Deaf Education Studies.  Heather earned her Master’s in Education of the Deaf at Smith College (Clarke School for the Deaf) and taught speech, language, and literacy skills in an auditory oral school for six years prior to completing her Ph.D. in the Program in Developmen-tal Psychology at Washington Univer-sity earlier this year.  Her research interests are broad and generally related to quantitative assessments of language and literacy development in deaf children who wear cochlear implants. She also is an experienced and highly-rated teacher at the univer-sity level.   New Minor in Speech and Hearing Sciences:  The new minor in the College of Arts & Sciences is available starting with the 2009-10 Academic Year.  Information is available to undergraduate students and has also been posted to the PACS website,  http://pacs.wustl.edu/ under “Pro-grams”.  U.S. News and World Report:  The Doctor of Audiology Program at WUSM was ranked number five in the country in the most recent report.NIDCD Training Grant:  PACS is a recipient of a National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) five-year research training program for doctoral students in audiology.  The program, the NRSA Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant (T35), will allow students to receive training over the summer months in research ethics and methodology, and work alongside established investigators in the field.  Students receive travel funds and a stipend. Bankaitis, Ph.D. published a paper in Audiology Today,	July/August	2009.		The	title of the paper is “Hearing Assistance Technology and Patient Counseling in Audiol-ogy.”•	 William	W.	Clark,	Ph.D.,	Director of PACS, was recently elected to a three-year term as secretary of the Faculty Senate and Faculty Senate Council at Washington University. •	 PACS	alumna	Dorie	Noll	(2007) received a reference to her Independent Study in a new book entitled, “Early Childhood Development: A Multicultural Perspective,”	by	Jeffrey	Trawick-Smith.  Dorie’s independent study, “Activities for Social Skills Development in Deaf Children Preparing to Enter the Mainstream,” is published in the Washington University’s School of Medicine repository for scholarly publications, http://dspace.wustl.edu/.•	 Melissa	Mooney,	Au.D.	student,	has been chosen to be the 2AmplificationsP r o g r a m  i n  a u d i o l o g y  a n d  C o m m u n i C at i o n  S C i e n C e S  •  C I D  at  Wa s h I n g t o n  U n I v e r s I t y  s C h o o l  o f  M e D I C I n eStudent Member and serve on the Board of the American Balance Society and will attend the next American Auditory Society (AAS) meeting held in March 2010.•	 Five	audiology	students	presented	posters	at	AAA	Audiology NOW!/2009 Meeting held in Dallas, Texas on April 1-4, 2009.  The student presenters were:  Jacquelyn	Baudhuin,	Rose	Bradley,	Alison	Brockmey-er, Natalie Lenzen, and Amy Umansky.•	 Dr.	Michael	Valente,	PACS	Faculty	Member	and	Director of Adult Audiology at WUSM, received the Presidential Award from the American Academy of Audiology for his contributions to the field and the AAA.   The award was presented at the recent annual AAA meeting held in Dallas, Texas, April 1-4, 2009.•	 Four	PACS	Au.D.	students,	along	with	PACS	faculty,	presented T35 Posters at the American Auditory Society (AAS) Meeting held on March 5-7, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  The student presenters were:  Noël Dwyer, Katherine Gorton, Lauren Lawler, and Mary Rybak Rice.  Amy Umansky, Au.D. student, and Judith	Lieu,	M.D.	also	presented	a	poster	titled,	“Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Hearing Loss.”•	 Au.D.	student	Elizabeth	Baum	Fernandez	presented	her capstone research project entitled, “The Protective Effect	of	Kanamycin	Treatment	on	Noise-Induced	Hearing	Loss	in	Young	CBA/J	Mice,”	at	the	Audiol-ogyNOW! 2009 Student Research Forum held on April 3, 2009 in Dallas, TX.  She was one of five students selected among numerous student applicants chosen to present at this meeting.  •	 Mark	Warchol,	Ph.D.,	Katherine	Gorton,	Au.D.	student, and Keiko Hirose, M.D., presented a poster entitled, “Macrophage Response to Ototoxic Injury: A Comparitive Study of the Avian and Mammalian Inner Ears,” at the Association for Research in Otolar-yngology Meeting, February 14-19 2009, in Baltimore, MD.  Mary Rybak Rice, Au.D. student, Patricia Gagnon, and Kevin Ohlemiller, Ph.D. also presented a poster entitled, “Divergence of Noise Vulnerability in CBA/J	and	CBA/CaJ	Mice.”•	 Kristin	Musser,	Au.D.	student,	was	awarded	a	fellow-ship from the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) Foundation.  The purpose of this fellowship is to expose students who are interested in research or wishing to pursue a career in research to a stimulating research environment under the guidance of a mentor.	The	title	of	Kristin’s	study	is,	“Effect	of	Hearing Loss on the Speech-Evoked Auditory Brain-stem Response in the Presence of Noise.”  •	 Maureen	Valente,	Ph.D.,	Director	of	Audiology	Studies, has published a new textbook titled, “Pure-tone Audiometry and Masking,” which debuted at the AudiologyNow! 2009 convention in Dallas, Texas.   She also was presented with the first-annual Margo Skinner Award from the Missouri Academy of Audiology (MAA)  on Thursday, September 11, 2008.  Valente, who was nominated by her professional colleagues, received the Award during the MAA annual convention in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Award recognizes Dr. Valente for her “dedication to the field of audiology...demonstration of compassion and integrity, and devotion to improving the communica-tion skills of those with hearing loss.”  The Award is named for the late Margo Skinner, who served on the PACS faculty for over 30 years and was well-known in the field of audiology for both her pioneering work with cochlear implants and her gentle and compas-sionate approach with patients, students, and fellow faculty	and	staff	alike.•	 Michael	Valente,	Ph.D.,	Professor	of	Otolaryngology	and Director of Adult Audiology, along with 12 current Au.D. students, presented a Learning Module at the AudiologyNow! 2009 meeting in Dallas, Texas.  The Module was titled “Classroom to Clinic: Creating a Hearing Aid Counseling Tool” and is based on a class assignment in Dr. Valente’s course on hearing aids.  Each student created a presentation on a specific area of hearing aid counseling. Rodrick Easterly, 1999 Rodrick served with the military in Iraq in 2005 and is currently serving in Afganistan.    1990s/2000sMarie Richter, 1995; Debbie (Kupchik) Brooks, 2003; Maggie (Basile) Matusofsky, 2003; and Insook Lim, 2003All received their Au.D. degrees from Salus University on May 22, 2009.2000s Tina (Prout) Stoody, 2000 Tina was married in 2008 and is  currently working as an Assistant Professor in Audiology at the University of Northern Colorado.Aimee (Woolard) Baker, 2002 Aimee and Michael Baker were married on May 9, 2008.  Rebecca Underwood, 2003 Rebecca and her husband Nick welcomed son Luke Solomon Underwood on May 1, 2008.  Ellie (Rice) White, 2003 Ellie married Patrick White on March 20, 2009.  She is cur-rently working at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri.Christina Borders, 2004 Christy received her Ed.D. in Special Education from the University of Cincinnati on June 12, 2009.  Her disserta-tion was titled, “Direct Observation as a Decision Method for Evaluation Inclusionary Classroom Participation of Children with Mild Hearing Impairment:  A Pilot Study.”Robyn (Patton) Brueggeman, 2004 Robyn married Jeff Brueggeman on June 26, 2004.  She is currently employed as an Itinerant Teacher for the Deaf with the Special School District of St. Louis County.  She now lives in Columbia, Illinois.Kacey (Lindgren) Modlin, 2004 Kacey was married on July 19, 2008.Aimee Marlow, 2006 After Aimee graduated, she moved to Broward County, Florida to work as an itinerant teacher.  She recently moved back to St. Louis and gave birth to her son Gabriel Alexander Moreno in April, 2008.  Aimee was married to Fernando Moreno in August, 2009 and plans go to Ecuador to visit family.Jill (Hardesty) Wyatt, 2006 Jill married Jordan Wyatt on October 20, 2007.  Jill is currently employed with St. Louis County Special School District teaching in a 4th and 5th grade deaf and hard of hearing TC classroom.Megan (Beauduy) Vega, 2007 Megan and her husband Luis Vega were married on May 23, 2009.  Megan is now working as a teacher at CREC-Soundbridge in New Haven, Connecticut.Maria Goldenberg, 2007 Maria and her husband welcomed son Max Jacob Goldenberg on June 25, 2008.  Maria is currently living in Indiana.Kristen (Bretz) Kramer, 2007 Kristen was married in August, 2008.Sarah (Reynolds) Bridges, 2007 Sarah was married on July 11, 2009.
