Disinfection of non-return valves prior intravenous therapy

Abstract

Uvod: Brezigelni nepovratni zamaški so bili uvedeni z namenom, da se zmanjšajo poškodbe zdravstvenih delavcev z injekcijskimi iglami. Le-ta uvedba pa je doprinesla k širjenju mikroorganizmov zaradi protokola razkuževanja brezigelnih nepovratnih zamaškov, ki med izvajalci zdravstvene nege ni poenoten. Namen zaključnega dela je predstaviti priporočila ter smernice za razkuževanje brezigelnih nepovratnih zamaškov pred aplikacijo intravenozne terapije. Metode: Uporabili smo pregled znanstvene in strokovne literature v angleškem jeziku. Gradivo smo iskali v naslednjih bazah: Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Google scholar ter Cinahl. Članki, uporabljeni za izdelavo zaključnega dela, niso bili starejši od 10 let. Vključili smo prosto dostopne in v celoti objavljene pregledne in znanstvene članke na izbrano temo, ki temeljijo na opazovalnih študijah ter sistematičnih pregledih literature. Rezultati: Še vedno je potrebno vzpostaviti jasne smernice o vzdrževanju intravenskih pripomočkov, saj je optimalna metoda razkuževanja nepovratnih zamaškov nejasna. Razprava in sklep: Večina raziskav poudarja, da je potrebno še nadaljnje raziskovanje tega področja. Predvsem o optimalnem tipu razkužila, času razkuževanja ter tehniki razkuževanja. Zaradi teh nejasnosti se zgodi, da je ta korak pri intervencijah velikokrat spregledan.Introduction: Needleless connectors were introduced to minimize the injuries of health care workers when operating with various needles. This has contributed to spread of microorganisms due to the non-uniform protocol of disinfection of needleless connectors between nursing providers. The purpose of this paper was to present recommendations and guidelines for the disinfection of needleless connectors prior intravenous therapy. Methods: We used a systematic review of scientific and professional literature in English. We searched for the material in the following databases: Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Google scholar and Cinahl. The articles used to produce the final work are no older than 2010. We have included freely accessible and fully published review and scientific articles on a selected topic based on observational studies and systematic literature reviews. Results: Clear guidelines on the maintance of intravenous devices should always be improved, as the optimal method of disinfection is still unclear. Discussion and conclusion: Most research emphasizes the need for further research in this area. Especially about the optimal type of disinfectant, disinfection time and disinfection tecnique. Because of these ambiguities, this step happens often to be overlooked in interventions.
