KRISTIN DYKSTRA)Reina María RodríguezUndertowFrom El piano; reprinted in anthology Bosque negro: Antología personal  (Havana: Ediciones UNIÓN, 2013)Nature sounds in the breeze but resounds in the soul.When the Malecón first overflows,piano keys fall to the sidewalk,handpainted flowers float awaynot as decoration but as sorrow.Time doubles back, it floods, I need that reversibility in order to exist.The noise of its waves doesn’t soothe mebetween bars of music, even the ones I won’t regret though I regret finding no octavein the right proportion for my hand to reach its horizon.The quiver of a string,vibration of an air columnfree of obstructionthrough which I’d wager:that a return is always an insertion of the selfbetween new waves—high notes, low notes, half steps between—INTI NO  83-84322a chord progression protecting some styleto defend us against defenselessness,a chorus that can’t take away our fearof the gale but calms us.The ocean’s fierce beat todayand then a devious tranquilitythat doesn’t muddy into other soundor protest. It obliterates.I will have drowned in the beat so many repetitive and variant timesthat I learned to float cautiously with a chorusbetween my teeth!To convince myself, alone, of my incapacity(absolute confidence)watching it roughen into a furythen calm, its gray lineover the loosed bridge moving against the keelof some instrument that soundsacross the whole of the tempo, the total time it lostbetween two waters.ResacaLa naturaleza suena en el aire, pero resuena en el alma.Cuando el Malecón empieza a desbordarsecaen en la acera tablas del piano,flores pintadas a mano salen a floteno como decoración, sino como dolor.El tiempo retorna, se reviertey necesito de esa reversibilidad para existir.El ruido de sus olas no me ha dejado tranquila,entre compases de los que no me arrepentiréincluso, arrepentida de no hallar una octavaen proporción para mi manoque alcance su horizonte.El temblor de una cuerda,la vibración de una columna de airesin obstrucciónINTI NO  83-84 323REINA MARÍA RODRÍGUEZpor la que apostaría:un retorno siempre es insertarseentre las nuevas olas--tonos altos, tonos bajos, semitonos--,una progresión que protege un estilopara defendernos de la indefensión,un estribillo que no nos quita el miedoa la tempestad, pero nos calma.El golpe del mar feroz este díay luego, su solapada tranquilidadque no se confunde con otros sonidosni se queja, pero mata.¡Me habré ahogado en él tantas vecesrepetitivas y diversasque aprendí con precaución a flotar con un estribilloentre los dientes!A convencerme sola de mi imposibilidad(mi confianza absoluta)al mirarlo enfurecersey tranquilizarsu raya grissobre el puente móvil desprendidocontra la quillade un instrumento que suenapor todo el tiempo que perdióentre dos aguas.Lily pond From Catch and Releasefor VirginiaShe wouldn’t open her letters:  “No, no, please . . .”She threw the razor blade downand didn’t cut her swollen vein.  Not yet.The pink dressing gown made from cheap curtain fabricsheathed the visibility she sustained with so much work.At last everything would have to come to its conclusion.But when?  How?A truth known only by a hare as it sinksinto a swamp, remote and ephemeral.Concluding and beginning at a prudent distance from the legitimated statues,INTI NO  83-84324all in one shot or all backwards,totally absurd: falling into the sky.The memory of a voice may bethe noise from jacks falling, hitting us,shiny, or piled up or in semicircles,like her impatient fall into the window.Her gaze toward that other sun setting far away when she saw the bridge,and below it a river,and inside her little pocket, stones—the jacks—that cracked with a suspicious indifference.They were so familiar with the lie, with the truth:a yellow-red target, something rounded like a target, squishy.They knew they were requiredto fall, would always land hard, knew the amountof time it took to prepare for the reencounterin the fatal crash, inside her pockets.A bridge that was a place for keeping (apparently)safe turned into a plank fragilewith indecision.Now the mirror returns you unscathed.Who are you?  Who are you?  Where has the doubt gone?There below the bridge, her side refracted a thousand timesthrough the sorrows of a place disturbing in its stillness.When you arrive there’s a fence:  fog.And the fog provokes still more indecision.I saw the panorama, would suddenly be contemplating itfor the last time.Though I’d like to reach out, touch her,the head that used to be hersdrooping on her shoulder; and the fogwould betray her.“It was always my brother . . . my brother who was emerging fromthe depths of the lily pond” –she would sayjust before she sank.INTI NO  83-84 325REINA MARÍA RODRÍGUEZLaguna de los nenúfarespara VirginiaElla no abrió sus cartas:  “no, no, por favor . . .”Tiró el filo de la navajay no abrió su vena deforme todavía.  Aún no.La bata rosa de tela barata por cortinale quitaba la visibilidad sostenida con tanto esfuerzo.Todo tendría al fin que concluir.Pero cuándo?  Cómo?Una verdad que sólo conoce la liebre que se hundeen el pantano, tan remota y efímera.Concluir, empezar, a una distancia prudente de las estatuaslegítimas,de un tirón o al revés,tan absurda a la caída contra el cielo.Sea la memoria de una vozel sonido de los boliches al caer, golpeándonos,brillantes, redondos o en semicírculos,como su impaciencia de caer contra la ventana.La mirada hacia el atardecer distantede aquel otro día en que ella vio el puente,y en el puente abajo, un río,y dentro de su pequeño bolsillo las piedras—los boliches—que sonaban con suspicaz indiferencia.Ellos sabían de tan cerca la mentira, la verdad,el propósito rojo amarillo, así de redondo, fofo.Ellos sabían que estaban obligadosa caer, a golpear siempre, y la duracióndel tiempo que costaba prepararse para el reencuentrocon el golpe fatal sobre la saya.Un puente que fue un sitio para estar (aparentemente)seguros se convirtió en tabla frágilde indecisión.Ahora el espejo te devuelve incólume.Quién eres? Quién eres? Dónde ha quedado la duda?Allá, bajo el puente, su costado refractado mil vecespor un dolor de lugar que azora todavíaquieto.Al llegar hay un cerco, es la neblina.INTI NO  83-84326Y la neblina provoca aún más indecisión.Tenía el panorama, de pronto lo contemplaría de nuevopor última vez.Aunque quisiera acercar la mano, tocar,aquella cabeza que era la suyasostenida por encima del hombro y la nieblala traicionaba.“Siempre era mi hermano . . ., mi hermano quién salía de lasprofundidades de la laguna de los nenúfares” –diría ellaantes de bajar.Freeway From Catch and ReleaseTempo: largo. You’re moving through sunset, a preamble.(He’s at the wheel.)The freeway is a wide open musical staffwhere sequence exists before lighttakes shape.When the traffic lights flick onthe sky is whiteand trees use the wind to tug atthe darkening shadows from other trees.Now you see the five-line staff of one lifetime,that site of volatile intersection.Where is the boundary of today’s twilight,of the one coming tomorrow?At what moment, exactly, does the evening die?At what moment does it flag or revive?How does color disappear, or the deep blue dark?How does it appear behind trees, houses,in front of you?Does it appear?  Disappear?Is it there, or did it vanish without becoming present?The driver follows the course set by a cone of artificial lightthat corresponds to his linearity.You divert the original flow of his musicand cross on the mutual causality of a tempo that goes away,inside you, disappearing with no sense of the one that will come next.INTI NO  83-84 327REINA MARÍA RODRÍGUEZThenyou skip hopscotch on the opposing sidewalkand see the figure of a car as it moves through the evening“by the block of the ocean’s fog,” to borrow your words.You see yourself so many years later, so many earlier,in the non-return.But the body’s wisdom misses the boundary.It renounces distance.The here confronting it is always the same: a perfect hiatus.You greet the woman leaving, she’s going away.  The lightsgo on being green, orange, or elusive.The evening is reduced to a pause moving past, a fibrous borderthat you caress with a finger on the windshield, damp at the end.The finger is the part that can feel the mist.And mist, like transparent fabric, hides the two tempos, the definitive texture from which reality is made,its curtain.CarreteraLargo atraviesas el crepúsculo, un preámbulo.(Él, al volante.)La carretera es una pauta abiertadonde la secuencia es antes que formaluz.Al prenderse los semáforosel cielo es blancoy los árboles arrastran con el vientosombras oscurecidas de otros árboles.Ahora ves el pentagrama de una vida,ese sitio de intersección volátil.Dónde está el límite de este atardecer de hoyy luego el de mañana?En qué momento muere con exactitud la tarde?En qué momento decae, o despierta?Cómo se pierde el color, o la negrura azul?Cómo aparece por detrás de los árboles, de las casas,y frente a ti?Aparece? Desaparece?Está, o se perdió sin ser?INTI NO  83-84328El chofer sigue la marcha por el cono de luz artificialque le corresponde a su linealidad.Tú desvías el cauce original de su músicay atraviesas la causalidad mutua de un tiempo que se va,dentro de ti, a perder,sin saber del que viene.Entonces,juegas al pon desde la acera contrariacuando ves la figura del auto que atraviesa la tarde“junto al bloque de niebla del océano” –has dicho.Te ves, tantos años después, tantos años antes,en el nunca regreso.Pero la sabiduría del cuerpo extraña al límite,renuncia a la distancia.El aquí que lo confronta es siempre el mismo: un hiato perfecto.Saludas a la que se va, a la que parte.  Los semáforossiguen verdes, anaranjados o escurridizos.La tarde es reducida a una espera que se transita, un borde fibrosoque acaricias con el dedo sobre el parabrisas, húmedo al fin.El dedo es el sitio que siente la llovizna.Y la llovizna, como una tela transparente, oculta los dos tiempos,la textura definitiva con que está hecha la realidad,su telón.
