Image Credit: Jill RodriguesDecember 17, 2018 By Edward FitzpatrickBRISTOL, R.I.  – Roger Williams University on Monday held a steel “topping-o ” ceremony, marking completion ofthe steel framework for a laboratories building for RWU’s School of Engineering, Computing and ConstructionManagement.On Monday morning, a steel beam – bearing an evergreen tree and signed by trustees, administrators, alumni,donors, faculty and students – was hoisted into place atop the three-story steel structure. The $13.8-million SECCMLabs will be named for former RWU Board of Trustees Chairman Richard L. Bready. The 27,325-square-foot buildingwill become a hub of laboratories, fabrication spaces and project rooms where students can apply theory to practiceusing state-of-the-art equipment. It’s a testament to the quality of our programs here. It’s a testament to the supportof our alumni and to the support of employers who hire our alumni.”Also, Workman said, “At the heart of the Roger Williams education is experiential learning, and this is really the  rstphysical representation of that core value on campus. This is, in some ways, a topping-o  ceremony for the e ort wehave had the last seven years to put experiential learning at the heart of everything we do – to make it pervasive.”Steel Topping-O  CeremonyWorkman emphasized that a topping-o  ceremony is meant to thank those who do the work of putting up thebuilding.“The Scandinavian Teutonic tribes would put an evergreen tree on the top of a new structure when the skeleton ofthat structure was completed to honor the Norse gods but also to honor the people who had built the structure,” hesaid. “In ancient times, they may have been the people from the tribe. In modern times, it’s the construction workersand the steelworkers who built this building.
