The site connects users to over 500,000 digital objects in more than 700 collections from over 130 institutions and 100 government agencies. The new site is designed to provide quick and direct access to these resources for all audiences and was developed by incorporating input from end users, librarians, and other stakeholders. The redesign incorporates a new logo design for the DLG and improved navigational tools.  Online visitors to the site will now be able to:   • conduct full-text searching of DLG-hosted collections along with item-level metadata searches; • perform textual and visual browsing of DLG databases and other web-based collections and sites items can be searched by subject, time period (timeline), geographic location (map browsing), genre, and repository; • expect seamless, responsive access to an accessible virtual library on Georgia history and culture that combines DLG databases with resources freely available through other repositories, organizations, and vendors; • carry out self-sufficient information seeking that meets the needs of Georgians across a broad range of ages and educational backgrounds and for a variety of uses, including structured learning in schools and higher education, lifelong learning, scholarship, and personal interest; • find information for librarians and archivists on digital library standards, best practices, and services that DLG provides; and • locate materials that promote new resources and partners.  "We’re excited about this fresh new design, and think that it will improve the search experience for Georgians and other researchers seeking out the unique and valuable resources within the Digital Library of Georgia," said Lucy Harrison, assistant vice chancellor for academic library services and executive director of GALILEO.  Julie Walker, state librarian of Georgia, noted, "Georgia's public libraries are excited to support the DLG's new interface, and will enjoy how simple it is to discover freely available and reusable historical images. Students of all ages will be able to integrate these primary sources into their websites, research, and homework assignments."  Public libraries around the state are being provided with printed materials, including rack cards and stickers, as well as a freely downloadable digital press kit to encourage use of the new site. Early, Montgomery, and Toombs County Newspapers Added to Georgia Historic Newspapers Website  Georgia HomePLACE and the Digital Library of Georgia are pleased to announce the addition of nearly 27,000 pages of South Georgia newspapers dating from 1863–1927 to the Georgia Historic Newspapers (GHN) website at https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/.  Cameron Asbell, director of the Ohoopee Regional Library System, which includes Montgomery and Toombs counties, said, “Making these newspapers available online provides a unique glimpse into a dynamic time when the area was transitioning from waterways to railways as the primary transportation of goods. This region was shaped by agriculture, timber, and transportation, and we are fortunate that now much of the everyday history recorded in newspapers can be found online for everyone to read.” GHN includes some of the state’s earliest newspapers, providing perspectives often missing in history books, including important African American, Roman Catholic, and Cherokee newspapers, as well as local and regional papers from across the state.  Consisting of six titles and over 4,000 issues covering Early, Montgomery, and Toombs counties, this newest digital collection provides historical images that are both full-text searchable and browsable by date. Issues are freely available online through Georgia Historic Newspapers.   “Newspapers remain the number one most frequently requested digital primary source format in Georgia’s public libraries,” said HomePLACE Director Angela Stanley. “We tend to think of Facebook as our virtual community meeting place, but newspapers have been filling this role since the 17th century. We’re excited to be able to offer greater geographical coverage in communities across South Georgia.”  GHN is compatible with all current browsers, and the newspaper page images can be viewed without the use of plug-ins or additional software downloads. Retrieved fromhttps://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol56/iss1/13  Digital Library of Georgia  The Digital Library of Georgia Receives Two Awards from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council  On October 16, 2018, the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council (GHRAC) presented two awards to the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) during the 16th annual GHRAC Archives Awards ceremony at the Georgia Archives. GHRAC awards recognize outstanding efforts in archives and records work in Georgia.  The first award was the Excellence in Archival Program Development by a Local Government Records Repository for the digitization of Flagpole magazine, 1987–2013, which can be seen at https://gahistoricnewspapers. galileo.usg.edu/lccn/sn94029049/. The Flagpole online collection project, which began in 2014, was a collaborative venture between Flagpole, the Athens-Clarke County Library, and the DLG. For three decades, Flagpole has been a mirror for the local culture of Athens and its thriving arts scene.  The second honor was the Award for Excellence in Archival Program Development by a State Institution, for the DLG’s subgranting program, which provides grant assistance for the digitization of small collections. The DLG’s subgranting program aims to broaden partner participation in the DLG by soliciting proposals for historic digitization projects in a statewide call to libraries, archives, and cultural heritage institutions. In 2017 and 2018, project applicants submitted proposals for projects with a cost of up to $5,000. The projects were administered by DLG staff who performed digitization and descriptive services on textual, graphic, and audio-visual materials (not including newspapers). New Digital Collections Available from Piedmont College Library  The DLG is pleased to announce the launch of two new collections from our partners at Piedmont College Library: the May Ivie Valise Collection and the Johnny Mize Collection. The collections are available thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.   The May Ivie Valise Collection, available at https://piedmont.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17007coll1, contains correspondence, printed programs, military documents, and a composition book belonging to May Ivie, alumna of Piedmont College from the 1940s.   The Johnny Mize Collection, available at https://piedmont.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17007coll3, includes baseball memorabilia, gloves, bats, autographed baseballs, uniforms, and photographs collected by Johnny Mize, native of Demorest, Georgia, and major league baseball player who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. Nicknamed “The Big Cat” and “Big Jawn,” Mize was a first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Yankees. He was a ten-time All-Star whose record included 359 home runs with a batting average of .312 over a career that spanned from 1936 to 1953. He won four National League home run titles, five World Series titles, a batting title, and three RBI crowns. Mize also hit three home runs in one game—more times than any other National League player at the time of his retirement.  1Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2019For both collections, DLG staff provided training and support for the creation and enhancement of descriptive metadata records by establishing best practices that helped Piedmont College Library staff prepare metadata records that meet standards for inclusion in the DLG and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). DLG staff also provided advice about the creation and management of digital collections by assisting with the setup of Piedmont’s digital asset management system.   Bob Glass, dean of libraries and college librarian at Piedmont College Library noted: “Piedmont College Library is so grateful for all the advice, training, and encouragement we received through our DLG Subgrant. We needed help learning about metadata creation and working with our digital library platform, CONTENTdm. Nicole Lawrence was a great coach as she helped us bring our collections online!”  Digitization of Pinebranch, the First Student Publication of South Georgia State Normal College and Georgia State Woman's College (Both Earlier Names for Valdosta State University).  The DLG also digitized Pinebranch, the first student publication of South Georgia State Normal College and Georgia State Woman's College (both earlier names for Valdosta State University). Pinebranch was a literary magazine published from September or October 1917 to May 1934. In addition to stories and poetry, the magazine included editorials and news from campus and alumni. The digitized issues are available at https://vtext.valdosta.edu/ xmlui/handle/10428/720/discover thanks in part to the DLG's 2017 Competitive Digitization grant program.   Pinebranch is important to researchers and teachers of women’s history, southern history, and the history of education, in that the journals reveal details about southern racial, ethnic, and gender specific attitudes in South Georgia’s progressive era, women’s suffrage, World War I, and the Great Depression. The publication’s articles provide first-hand, written accounts that offer a detailed look at daily life and attitudes at a southern women’s school of the early 20th century.   Melanie Byrd, professor in the department of history at Valdosta State University noted: “I can attest that my students who have worked in the university archives with Pinebranch find the material especially engaging because the articles are products of college students like themselves. While students may not always identify with history in terms of national trends, big events, and abstract ideologies and worldviews, they do connect with the experiences of other college students. Publications like Pinebranch bring the history of previous eras to life for students in a relatable, humanized manner. Reading the publication also illustrates directly and vividly how attitudes have changed over time.”  Nineteenth Century Ledger and Scrapbook that Documents the Civil War Period in Savannah Now Available Online  The DLG also made available a 19th century ledger and scrapbook from our partners at the Coastal Heritage Society that features entries from the Civil War period recorded by employees of the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia at https://dlg.usg.edu/ collection/chso_cgrc. The ledger was digitized and described as part of the DLG's 2018 Competitive Digitization grant program.   Lydia Moreton, the Curator of Collections for Coastal Heritage Society noted: “the Carpentry Shop ledger is a snapshot in time at one of the busiest industrial railroad complexes in the South just prior to and during the American Civil War. It is a highly prized object in the Coastal Heritage Society collection. This ledger has detailed information spanning four years at the Carpentry Shop in the Central’s Savannah Shops. This includes fabricating weapons for the war effort and construction of the Passenger 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 56, Iss. 1 [2019], Art. 13https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol56/iss1/13Shed which is now on the National Register of Historic Places.”  The ledger and scrapbook span from 1860 to 1864 and the 1870s to the 1890s, respectively. Sections of the ledger record the tasks of white employees and laborers as well as work performed by enslaved African Americans, providing a snapshot in time at one of the busiest industrial railroad complexes in the South just prior to and during the American Civil War. The scrapbook portions of the book feature assorted newspaper clippings from the 1870s to the 1890s that include popular poetry, illustrations, and newspaper articles related to love, death, murder trials, funerals, and topics surrounding bereavement.  Rita Elliott, education coordinator and research associate at the Lamar Institute in Rincon, Georgia, stated: "the many types of history the ledger contains make it a unique source for multiple audiences. It can provide content for exhibit design, public outreach programming, history books, and sixth through twelfth grade curricula. Exhibit designers and public outreach professionals will delight in the historical script reflective of important historical themes. History scholars as well as graduate students will find it a potent source to mine for their specific research interests. Railroad buffs will be fascinated with the information it contains. Teachers can benefit from a unique primary document to use in their curricula."  Oral Histories from Chinese-Americans Living in Augusta Now Available  The DLG has also recently made available the recordings of the Augusta Chinese-American Oral History Project at https://dlg.usg.edu/ collection/gaec_caoh. The collection, which belongs to the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System (ARCPLS), contains 26 oral history interviews of individuals who either immigrated to Augusta, Georgia, from China, and/or grew up in Augusta during the early to mid-twentieth century. It is available thanks in part to the DLG's 2018 Competitive Digitization grant program.   The interviews were gathered in 2011 and 2012 by members of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of Augusta (CCBA) with ARCPLS serving as a partner institution. The original intent of the project was to create an archive of stories and personal family histories of a select group of individuals, mostly elders within the Augusta Chinese-American community, to preserve for future generations, particularly for the younger members of the community. By making the oral histories easily accessible online, younger generations are more likely to seek out information regarding their heritage.  ARCPLS Genealogy and Local History Librarian Tina Monaco noted: “because of the variety of topics discussed by those interviewed, the oral histories appeal to a broad number of 3Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2019researchers, social historians, those tracing their family histories, and students. Anyone interested in studying immigration, minority cultures, economic history, race relations, or the establishment of Chinese-American organizations in the South will find the interviews informative.”    Monaco also stated: “several of the interviewees discuss family-owned businesses that opened in predominantly African-American neighborhoods in Augusta during the Jim Crow era. Whites in Augusta refused to provide services to African-Americans thereby opening a window of opportunity which Augusta’s Chinese-Americans took advantage of by opening successful groceries, restaurants, and laundry establishments, a few of which were damaged or destroyed during the Augusta Race Riots of 1970. This dynamic would be a rich area of study for both social scientists and historians concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors among minority and discriminated populations in the Jim Crow South. Finally, these stories offer a fresh voice to the complex narrative of southern history, one that speaks to the diversity and multiculturalism of the South.”  Travis Tom, curator of the Augusta Chinese-American Oral History project and board member of the CCBA noted: "we are hoping that the oral histories reach a wider audience—across the nation and perhaps the world—and educate those interested in how Chinese Americans settled in Augusta, Georgia (the Southeast) and started their lives. It is important that we recorded these stories to show how people in our community lived during our time (early 1900s–2011). We encourage other groups to do the same."  Six Competitive Digitization Service Grants Awarded to Georgia Cultural Heritage Institutions Across the State  Six institutions are recipients of the fourth set of service grants awarded in a program intended to broaden partner participation in the DLG. For 2019, the DLG solicited proposals for historic digitization projects in a statewide call, and applicants submitted proposals for projects with a cost of up to $7,500 (an increase of $2,500 from previous years). The projects will be administered by DLG staff who will perform digitization and descriptive services on textual (not including newspapers), graphic, and audio-visual materials.  Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room (Athens, Georgia) received a grant to digitize eight bound ledgers dating from 1902 to 1907, the earliest section of the City of Athens Police and Mayor’s Court Records, which reflect the cultural, political, social, geographic, and economic diversity of the Athens community as well as interactions with law enforcement and the justice system.  Bartow History Center (Cartersville, Georgia) received a grant to digitize a portion of a collection of county documents on such topics as: guardianship (1850–1929), indentures (1860–1929), lunacy (1866–1929), pauperism 4Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 56, Iss. 1 [2019], Art. 13https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol56/iss1/13(1866–1879), land grants and deeds (1866–1929), and other records. The records were created by court officials to document legal proceedings and transactions.  Booker T. Washington High School (Atlanta, Georgia) received a grant to digitize annuals dating from 1931 to 1968 that document the evolution of African-American secondary education and feature the attendees of the first public high school for African-Americans in Georgia. Notable alumni from the school include Martin Luther King, Jr., Lena Horne, Nipsey Russell, and Louis Wade Sullivan.   Fulton County Schools Archives (Hapeville, Georgia) received a grant to digitize the Superintendent’s Annual Reports from 1929 to 1977 that contain demographic information pertaining to the growth of the school system located in and around Atlanta. The oldest portion of this collection provides evidence of a largely rural and segregated district during the Great Depression, while the latter portion is a culmination of the movement after the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education United States Supreme Court decision to integrate the schools—a process that lasted 17 years.  Thomasville History Center (Thomasville, Georgia) received a grant to digitize the correspondence and diaries of Hazel Beamer Cutler, a Broadway entertainer, and her family friend Candace Wheeler, founder of the American decorative arts movement, both of whom lived in Southwest Georgia.  University of West Georgia Special Collections (Carrollton, Georgia) received a grant to digitize publications from the Carroll County Genealogical Society that reflect the settlers of Carroll County in West Georgia after the Indian Springs Treaty of 1824 and inventories of burial sites for both whites and African-Americans throughout the county.  Preference in the selection process was given to proposals from institutions that had not yet collaborated with the DLG. Bartow History Center, Booker T. Washington High School, Fulton County Schools Archives, and Thomasville History Center were all new partners for the DLG.  Sheila McAlister, director of the Digital Library of Georgia noted: "the subgranting program continues to be a success. We've broadened the DLG partner base, and the collections selected by our review team reflect the state's diversity. The materials document schools in Atlanta and Fulton County, diaries and correspondence from Thomasville, genealogy in Carroll County, and county and court records from Bartow and Clarke counties. Taylor, Jr. Foundation, the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) digitized approximately 53,930 pages of Georgia newspaper titles published prior to 1861 from microfilm held by the Georgia Newspaper Project (30TUhttp://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/U30T). The project created full-text searchable versions of the newspapers and presented them online for free in its Georgia Historic Newspapers database at 30Thttp://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu30T in accordance with technical guidelines developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress for the National Digital Newspaper Program (see 30Thttps:// www.loc.gov/ndnp/30T). The Georgia Historic Newspapers database utilizes the Library of Congress's open source tool, Chronicling America, for the online delivery of the full-text newspapers. Users will be able to search the database for geographic, corporate, family, and personal names.  DLG digitized 138 pre-Civil War titles from the following Georgia cities: Albany, Americus, Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Auraria, Calhoun, Carrollton, Cartersville, Cassville, Clarkesville, Columbus, Covington, Cuthbert, Darien, Forsyth, Ft. Hawkins, Greensboro, Griffin, Hamilton, Louisville, Lumpkin, Macon, Madison, Mount Zion, Newnan, Oglethorpe, Penfield, Petersburg, Rome, Savannah, Sparta, Thomaston, Thomasville, Warrenton, and Washington.  Vivian Price Saffold, chairman of the R.J. Taylor, Jr. Advisory Committee, stated: “Since 1971 genealogy researchers have depended on publications funded by grants from the R.J. Taylor, Jr. Foundation. The Foundation has funded the printing of thousands of books in traditional format. More recently the addition of digital projects, such as the Digital Library of Georgia’s newspaper project, have made possible free online access to tens of thousands of Georgia newspaper pages that previously were difficult to research. The DLG project is a great example of the kind of grant request the Foundation is proud to fund. Georgia newspapers are a valuable resource. On the technical side, the online newspaper images are sharp and clear, and the functionality of the indexing is excellent.”   Athens, Georgia Crime Dockets from 1902 to 1907 Now Freely Available Online  The DLG is pleased to announce the availability of the City of Athens Police/Mayor's Court Records collection at 30Thttps://dlg.usg.edu/ collection/arl_capmcr30T. The collection, which belongs to the Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room, is made available thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.   “We appreciate the opportunity to work with DLG to make these documents more accessible to everyone,” said Athens Regional Library System Executive Director Valerie Bell. “These dockets provide a valuable glimpse into Athens’ past, and they tell some fascinating stories of our city’s day-to-day life.” 1Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2019The digital collection consists of eight bound dockets dating from 1902 to 1907, and includes about 5,760 individual arrest cases in Athens, Georgia. Entries generally include a case number, the defendant's name, the code violated, the date and location of the arrest, the date papers were served, the arresting officer's name, a list of witnesses, and the dispensation of the case.   The digitization of these items makes them more widely available to researchers of economics, criminology, political science, urban development, law, sociology, history, geography, and genealogy. Because the location of arrests was included in these records, researchers are given a true picture of the city of Athens in the early 20th century. These dockets can also be cross-referenced with resources already available online, such as newspapers, city directories, and historic maps, opening many new opportunities to delve into Athens’ past.   Ashley Shull, Archives and Special Collections Coordinator at the Athens-Clarke County Heritage Room noted: “ultimately the Police/Mayor’s Court Dockets of the City of Athens reflect the cultural, political, social, geographic, and economic diversity of our community. Each simple entry contains a wealth of information, all arising from one interaction with law enforcement, giving the researcher a more complete impression of the historical city of Athens.”   The Heritage Room maintains a physical collection of 97 volumes of the court records, which are available to view by request at the library.  Digitized Recordings of the Radio Program Southwind: The New Sounds of the Old Confederacy Now Available.  In conjunction with the Atlanta History Center, 150 recordings of the radio program Southwind: The New Sounds of the Old Confederacy are now available at 30Thttp://cdm17222.contentdm. oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/p17222coll430T. These resources are also available online thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program.   Atlanta journalist Boyd Lewis conceived, created, produced, and hosted Southwind, a half-hour radio program of features and documentaries on the people, issues, and events of the South. The program aired on WABE FM in Atlanta between November 14, 1980 and January 29, 1987. The collection contains 150 out of the 177 editions that were recorded. Each of the Southwind programs consisted of one to three segments that featured original reporting either by Mr. Lewis or his colleagues in public radio throughout the Southeast. Many of the segments focused on contemporary events that Mr. Lewis placed in historical context, while other segments were retrospectives of past events that featured the voices of the participants. The segments touched upon a broad range of topics relating to the history of Atlanta and the American South in the mid- to late 20th century, including the Civil Rights Movement, African American history, city and regional economic and cultural development in the Southeast, business and 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 56, Iss. 2 [2019], Art. 13https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol56/iss2/13labor history, Atlanta theater, folk life, literature, and political history. As such, they are a potentially valuable primary source of scholarly and journalistic inquiry.  Southwind included feature interviews with historical figures such as the authors Erskine Caldwell and Paul Hemphill, educator Benjamin E. Mays, and former President Jimmy Carter. The program also featured commentaries by authors Pearl Cleage and Toni Cade Bambara, and a 1986 recording of author James Dickey reading selections of his poetry. Many episodes included features about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These segments included audio excerpts from many of King’s colleagues, including the Reverend Joseph Lowery and C. T. Vivian. Other features included an assessment of Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young’s first 100 days in office; a segment on threats to the renewal of the Voting Rights Act of 1965; a profile on civil rights activist Heman Sweatt; a feature on the 1986 Fifth District congressional race between John Lewis and Julian Bond; a story about Atlanta churches offering sanctuaries to immigrants fleeing political turmoil in Latin American countries; a piece on North Carolina’s Greensboro Massacre in 1978, in which Klansmen killed five demonstrators; a feature about the Atlanta Crackers and Atlanta Black Crackers baseball teams; and several stories about the series of kidnappings and murders that took place in Atlanta in the late 1970s and early 1980s, known as the “Atlanta Child Murders.”  Joseph Crespino, Jimmy Carter Professor in the history department at Emory University noted that these digitized resources are “an invaluable resource for researchers and students of the modern history of Atlanta and the South, as well as the history and legacy of the modern civil rights movement.” 3Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2019

Digital Library of Georgia  Two Mid-20th Century Collections Recall Atlanta Neighborhoods Lost to Urban Renewal, and Georgia’s Growing Catholic Community   Two new collections of digitized films and slides documenting the growth of Georgia’s Catholic community between 1938–1979 are now available freely online from the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG). With these materials from Marist School educators Reverend Michael Kerwick, SM, (1912–1990) and Reverend Vincent Brennan, SM, (1912–1993), researchers are able to piece together the history of the Marist School’s campus, community, and activities at its former location (as Marist College) in downtown Atlanta and its Brookhaven home (as Marist School) on Ashford-Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County.    The time periods of Father Kerwick’s and Father Brennan’s collections coincide with the exponential growth of the city’s Catholic community. During the mid-20th century, Atlanta claimed 30,000 Catholic residents. By the end of the century, that number grew to nearly 300,000.    These materials also show portions of downtown Atlanta that were lost through development in the 1950s and early 1960s. A major reason for Marist School’s relocation to suburban Brookhaven was the encroaching development of the interstate system and the use of eminent domain to acquire portions of the original campus. Scenes from the original campus and downtown street scenes have captured buildings and streetscapes that were lost to urban renewal.    Dr. Michael Bieze and Dr. Louisa Moffitt, archivists at the Marist School said:   The [digitized] images were taken by Father Vincent Brennan during those years before Marist School was moved to its suburban location in the mid-1960s and includes images from both the old campus on Ivy Street, as well as images of the new campus on Ashford-Dunwoody Road.   Some additional themes covered in these collections include school commencements, athletics programs, formal events such as promenades, and visits to Marist parishes throughout Georgia. Dr. Bieze and Dr. Moffitt both added: “In addition, there are images of Brunswick, Saint Simons Island, Darien, and Jekyll Island during those years.”    Two New Digital Collections Provide Genealogical Coverage to Underrepresented East Central Georgia    As recipients of a service grant awarded earlier in 2021, the Greater Clarks Hill Regional Library System has worked in partnership with the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) to release court records dating back to the 1700s and funeral home records from the mid-20th century available online.    1Mastrovita: News – Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2021These courthouse and funeral home records will serve genealogical researchers looking for information about ancestors from east-central Georgia, a historically under-documented region of the state, and will provide information about Lincoln County residents dating back to the 18th century, and as far forward as the mid-20th century.    The first collection, Lincoln County Courthouse Records, includes court documents that cover a variety of areas such as court cases, assault charges, writs of fieri facias (FIFAs), cases against the state of Georgia, power of attorney documents (POAs), bench warrants, petitions, summons, slander charges, illegitimate children cases, affidavits, animal appraisals, court appointed special advocates (CASAs), debt collections, evictions, and plats, dating from 1700–2020.   The next collection, Rees Funeral Home Records, includes obituaries and other funeral arrangement details for some residents or former residents of Lincoln County, with dates ranging from the 1940s to the 1960s.  Mallory Harris, a librarian at the Columbia County Library, described the importance of these collections to Georgia residents:    The Rees Funeral Home Funeral Records collection contains obituaries from a Lincoln County funeral home. We selected these obituaries because they contain family background and general information about people with ties to the Lincoln County area and can especially help genealogists with discovering research leads.   The Lincoln County Courthouse Records contain legal information from affidavits to summons dating back to the 1700s. We also chose to include the courthouse records because they are excellent primary sources that discuss many kinds of legal proceedings which took place in Lincoln County history and could serve as great evidence in historical research for that area.   Kathleen Reichl, the staff coordinator for the Columbia County Library Genealogy Club emphasized that “as a genealogist myself, I have personally used these records, as have many of my patrons and genealogy club members. We find them invaluable.”  Urban Planning, Civil Rights, and Trends in Landscape Design in Savannah Highlighted   In partnership with the City of Savannah Municipal Archives, the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) has made the minutes of the Park and Tree Commission 1896–1929 available freely online.    The historical significance of the collection may not be obvious at first, but Luciana Spracher, director for the City of Savannah Municipal Archives, described its importance to contemporary research:    While on the surface the Park and Tree Commission Minutes might seem mundane, upon closer inspection they contain important information that reflects the intersections of urban planning and civil rights, trends in landscape design, development of Savannah’s cemeteries (both African American and white, since Savannah’s cemeteries were originally segregated), and details such as the use of convict 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 58, Iss. 4 [2021], Art. 15https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol58/iss4/15labor in city infrastructure projects; all topics that draw on current socio-political trends and that are largely underrepresented in scholarship.    Minutes from the early 20th-century discuss issues surrounding segregation of public facilities, such as public pools and park benches. These records offer insider perspectives into the decision-making process related to these Jim Crow-era policies that are not often found in governmental records.    Spracher also described the importance of digitizing the collection for accessibility:    Currently this collection is underutilized by researchers because it is available only on site in our research facility in Savannah and is often overlooked as researchers are likely to believe it contains information limited to topics such as tree planting, parks, and playgrounds. By digitizing the collection and sharing it through the Digital Library of Georgia (and thereby through the Digital Public Library of America), it will become more widely accessible to researchers in broad geographic locations.    Daves Rossell, professor of architectural history at the Savannah College of Art and Design  added:    Having a doctorate in American architectural and urban history, with a specialty in vernacular architecture and cultural landscape, I have had call to use the Municipal Archives on many occasions, including in preparation for historic district nominations, historic landscape recordation, and a variety of research on individual buildings. Without the Park and Tree Commission’s records, such fundamental aspects of our civic heritage would be as good as lost. The Park and Tree Commission records are among the most diverse and valuable resources available on many such topics.  Birth Registers from Historically Endangered Georgia Nursing Home for Expectant African American Mothers   The Georgia B. Williams Nursing Home in Camilla, Georgia, and the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) have worked together to digitize and present online the birth registers of the mothers and babies born at the Georgia B. Williams Nursing Home between 1949–1971.  This nursing home, located at the home of state-certified midwife Mrs. Beatrice ("Miss Bea") Borders (1892–1971), was the first and only professional birthing center in the rural South where African American women were allowed by local doctors to receive midwife delivery for their newborns during segregation, Jim Crow depression, and medical deprivation in the 20th century.  3Mastrovita: News – Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2021“Miss Bea” and her assistants oversaw over 6,000 births and provided a safe place for African American mothers who had nowhere else to go.  These birth records were recorded in mid-century composition notebooks and contain essential genealogical information.   Depending on the volume, some entries include the mother's name, the date she entered the facility, the time of the birth, the baby's weight, the baby's gender, and whether there were any complications such as stillbirths. Some entries include additional genealogical information such as occupation, age, address, birthplace, number of children in the family, and the name of the father.  Melissa Jest, program coordinator for African American Programs at the Georgia Historic Preservation division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs said:   The digitization and cataloging of the records from this Black-owned/operated business presents an opportunity for students and researchers to learn about this historically significant place and the people who entered its doors.   It is our hope that this project will bring awareness to Mrs. Borders and will build support for the physical preservation of where she did her work.  The Georgia B. Williams Nursing Home in Camilla, Georgia survives as a very rare example of a professional birthing center run by Mrs. Borders, a state-certified midwife. Three New Historical Map Collections Now Available from the City of Savannah Municipal Archives  Record Series 3121-007, Engineering Department – General Maps, 1798-1961, no date, https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/gsg_edgm, which contains maps from 1798 to 1961 that illustrate Savannah property holdings, as well as land subdivision for city and private development. The maps also record property lines, right-of-ways, water and sewer lines, and street openings. Many maps include the names of property owners.  Record Series 3121-019, Savannah Cadastral Survey – Ward Survey Maps, 1939-1940, https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/gsg_scswsm. This collection includes survey maps of Savannah’s wards prepared in 1939 and 1940 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as part of the three-year, $65,000 WPA Savannah Cadastral Survey project. The City of Savannah is laid out in a system of wards, or blocks of land. The Cadastral Survey included all wards within the City’s corporate limits at the time. On May 9, 1940, Major H. U. Wallace, District WPA Engineer, presented Mayor Thomas Gamble with the Ward Survey Maps at City Hall. The survey was originally intended for use of the local tax assessors, but it has also proved useful for planning public utilities and improvements, determining property lines, and tracing the history of buildings and properties.  Record Series 3121-020, Engineering Department – Major Subdivision Maps, 1871-1972, no date, https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/ gsg_edmsm, which includes 249 maps of Savannah neighborhoods and subdivisions submitted to the City of Savannah Engineering Department for review and approval. The maps were prepared by a variety of surveyors and engineers, representing the City of Savannah, Chatham County, and private engineering and architectural firms. Many of the maps are copies or tracings submitted to the Engineering Department. Some of the maps include approval information by the city engineer, county engineer, Chatham-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission and/or the mayor and aldermen of the City of Savannah.  These historical maps are a rich resource documenting the development of Savannah’s town plan, wards, and neighborhoods through the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Within the General Maps collection, the City of Savannah Municipal Archives has included a very early 1798 township map that documents the extension of the “Oglethorpe Plan” outside of the town limits to encompass the garden and farm lots. This, along with the progression of maps throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, shows how Savannah’s unique plan was executed and evolved. The City of Savannah Municipal Archives has seen a dramatic increase in researcher interest in Savannah’s 20th century development, including citizens and community groups trying to document their neighborhoods, as well as historians researching the loss and preservation of Savannah’s infrastructure and built environment and how that fits in to a national context. The inclusion of the mid-20th century Ward Survey Maps provides a valuable point-in-time snapshot of Savannah before the preservation movement began.  Luciana Spracher, director of the City of Savannah Municipal Archives, noted: “the maps are regularly used by students (K-12 and college), historians, homeowners, citizens/residents, City staff, etc., and online access will surely increase this use and expand our geographical reach to those outside of Savannah who cannot physically come in to City Hall. We’ve also recently seen an increase in the ways in which people are using historical records, not just for traditional academic works, but for art applications and digital humanities projects. We hope that greater access to our records, and to a younger audience that may not access them through traditional onsite visits, will encourage new interactions with archives and new innovative projects.”  Monthly Teacher Reports from African American Rural and City Schools Operating During the 1930s in Laurens County, Georgia Now Available Online  DLG was pleased to announce the availability of the Teacher’s Monthly Reports Collection at https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/zhe_tmr. The collection, which belongs to the Oconee Regional Library System, is available online thanks in part to the DLG's 2018 Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects. The Teacher’s Monthly Reports collection includes monthly teacher reports from African American rural and city schools operating from 1930 to 1939 in Laurens County, Georgia. These monthly reports were created by individual teachers to be submitted to the Laurens County Superintendent. The reports list student names, age, grade, and attendance for the month. Many of these records also show teacher salaries, addresses, and other information. The DLG has digitized 126 folders with reports for 58 schools.   Cristina Hernández Trotter, head of the Reference Department and the Heritage Center of the Oconee Regional Library System described the impact this new collection will have for researchers and genealogists:  “family and local historians will be thrilled to have online access to this information. Genealogists will eagerly pore over these pages in search of relatives. Local historians can use these records to paint a more detailed picture of our county’s educational system during the 1930s. Because these records contain the home address of some teachers and principals, any scholars interested in the history of the micropolitan nature of Dublin, Georgia will find these primary source documents of interest.”   “We are so excited to be able to partner with DLG to make these documents discoverable online,” Trotter continued, “This collection will have such a great impact on our community. Scholars interested in the history of education and civil rights in Georgia will be pleased to discover the rich historical information this collection contains.”  Groundbreaking Georgia LGBTQ Television Programming Now Available Online  DLG was also pleased to announce the availability of the Mike Maloney Collection of Out TV Atlanta Video Recordings at: http://digitalcollections.library.gsu.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/outtv. It is available thanks in part to the DLG's 2018 Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.   Out TV Atlanta, which ran from 1999-2000, was a half-hour weekly news and entertainment show focused on LGBTQ life that aired in Atlanta and Savannah. The show was supported financially by its creator, Michael B. Maloney, along with his family and friends. As producer of the show, Maloney saw that most press coverage of LGBTQ life involved night clubs and drag queens; he sought to widen media focus on “ordinary” gay people who were firefighters, attorneys, and regular members of the community. Events covered include Governor Roy Barnes’s address to the Atlanta Executive Network, a gay professional organization (the first in the state), the first gay pride parade in Savannah, political events, art exhibitions and performances, and much more.  Kathryn Michaelis, digital projects coordinator, Digital Library Services, at Georgia State University noted: “we anticipate that the videos will be of interest to a wide variety of users, including researchers of LGBTQ and Atlanta history, members of the local and national LGBTQ community, media scholars, gender studies scholars, and the general public. The videos are unique primary sources that vividly document many aspects of LGBTQ life in Atlanta at the turn of the millennium. Once the videos are discoverable, they can be used for teaching, research, and entertainment, and could potentially be used by filmmakers for documentary purposes.”  Ryan Roemerman, executive director of the LGBT Institute of the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, stated: "we believe that Mr. Maloney’s groundbreaking work is of immense historic value. As the dawn of the new millennium approached, Mr. Maloney and his reporters were capturing events and preserving the moments that allow us to dig deeper into the cultural and emotional landscape for LGBTQ people at that time. The potential for use, especially amongst Georgia State University students, can provide young LGBTQ people today with a better understanding of a bygone era. These historic video recordings can convey what written words cannot always do, and are sure to be utilized in even greater numbers as time passes on." Digital Library of Georgia  Decades of Episodes of Augusta, Georgia’s Pioneering African American Gospel Television Program Parade of Quartets Now Available Online  The Digital Library of Georgia partnered with the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia Libraries to digitize part of its collection of Parade of Quartets. This gospel program has aired on WJBF-TV in Augusta, Georgia for more than 50 years. The collection is available at: https:// dlg.usg.edu/collection/ugabma_poq  The footage documents decades of regional gospel music performances, religious practices, and political activities. Ruta Abolins, director of the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection, noted that these materials are “part of the largest collection of gospel performance footage at any North American library.”  Parade of Quartets, broadcast on WJBF-TV in Augusta since 1954, is a rare example of a sustained African American media presence on a southern television affiliate. Hundreds of well-known Black gospel musicians such as Shirley Caesar, Dottie Peoples, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the Dixie Hummingbirds, and the Swanee Quintet have appeared on the program. In the last few decades, the program's content has expanded to include appearances by local and national African American political leaders. Some of these leaders appear in the digitized materials, which cover the period from 1980 to 2011.  This content serves the study of gospel music, religious broadcasting, African American programming, African American community outreach and organization, local television programming, African American politicians, entertainment, musicology, performance studies, African American studies, southern studies, civil rights history, journalism and media studies, and business.  Dr. Barbara McCaskill, professor of English and associate academic director of the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, and co-director of the Civil Rights Digital Library at the University of Georgia, said that the collection of shows documents a broad spectrum of essential aspects of life for African Americans in the South. McCaskill explained that “the name ‘Parade’ in the program's title alludes to the pageant tradition in Afro-Protestant churches. At Christmas, Easter, and church anniversaries, youth and adults perform brief skits of Bible parables and lessons, sing spirituals, and recite Bible verses. Rooted in this important Afro-Protestant pageant tradition, which combines oration, song, and performance in a unique form of worship, Parade of Quartets exemplifies how Black Christians used the new medium of television to agitate for social change and honor their communities, as well as showcasing local and regional black gospel artists.”  1Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2020McCaskill further explained that “secular-themed church pageants commemorate the patriotism and military service of African American men and women. Additionally, they laud the contributions of African American individuals, communities, and organizations. Many of the artists who guested on the show pitched advertisements for Black-owned businesses. So Parade of Quartets is also valuable evidence that southern African Americans recognized the power of television to build community wealth and multigenerational financial stability.”  McCaskill concluded, “for its connections to the Afro-Protestant pageant tradition, its dual functions as an example of musical innovation and civil rights activism, and its effectiveness as a lever for African American business growth, Parade of Quartets is a national treasure.”  Karlton Howard, who has produced and hosted Parade of Quartets for more than thirty years, added, “the Howard family and Parade of Quartets are eternally grateful to the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection for the gift of preserving portions of the video history of Parade of Quartets. Your kindness will ensure that the culture of the African American gospel quartet will be enjoyed and cherished for generations to come.”  Historical Issues of a Popular Georgia Agricultural Bulletin Now Available Freely Online  Thanks to a partnership with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the University of Georgia (UGA) Map and Government Information Library (MAGIL), and the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG), more than 1,712 issues of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin dating from 1926–1963 are now available in the Georgia Government Publications online database.  “We are fortunate that previous generations had the foresight to preserve early copies of the Georgia Market Bulletin, creating an archive that shows the incredible progression of agriculture from mule days to the technology age,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. “We are grateful for the partnership of the University of Georgia’s Map and Government Information Library and the Digital Library of Georgia in helping us preserve this archive in digital form and make it available to all Georgians. It is a valuable record of the tremendous strides we’ve made as both an industry and a society.”  The project began when Amy Carter, editor of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin, reached out to UGA’s Georgia state documents librarian Sarah Causey, asking for help in preserving back issues that had begun to crumble. “Amy and I both recognized this as a great opportunity to not only preserve her copies, but to also enhance access by adding 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 57, Iss. 4 [2020], Art. 18https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol57/iss4/18them to our digital collection of Georgia state publications in the DLG,” said Causey, who partnered with the Digital Library of Georgia to preserve and provide access to government documents and records that are part of MAGIL’s collections.  Since 1917, Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin has published agriculture and consumer news and market information, and facilitated sales for livestock, farm equipment, and other items for Georgia farmers and others in the industry.  “Throughout its 103-year history, the paper has served as a means of communication between the Georgia Department of Agriculture and its constituency which, when you think about it, is every Georgian,” Carter said. “The Market Bulletin still connects farmers with consumers seeking farm-fresh goods statewide, but it also serves as a vehicle for other divisions of the department such as Fuel and Measures, Plant Protection, Animal Health, Structural Pest, and the Georgia Grown marketing program to reach consumers with important news and information that directly impacts their daily lives.”  Carter added that the newspaper’s archives demonstrate changing trends in farming over the decades, and a popular recipe feature continues to this day.  Carter said, “if you look at today’s paper, you’ll see that the Farm Machinery category of our Classified ads section is very popular. Many people buy and sell second-hand tractors, combines, pickers, and tillers from and to fellow growers through the Market Bulletin. Between the 1920s and the 1950s, however, that was actually a very small percentage of our advertising. Livestock, poultry, seeds, flowers, honeybees, and even chewing tobacco were much more in demand. Another popular item advertised for sale from the Great Depression up until the 1960s was ‘sackcloth’—burlap or cotton feed and seed bags repurposed to make clothes, curtains, towels, all manner of household goods. You can tell by reading those ads that farmers quickly seized upon a lucrative ‘side hustle’ by washing, ironing, and selling the sacks that contained their livestock feed and crop seed.”  Materials Documenting the Beginning of Peachtree City, Georgia are Now Available Freely Online  New online records that describe the history of Peachtree City, Georgia, one of the country's most successful post-World War II "new towns," are now available for researchers in the Digital Library of Georgia. The collection, Peachtree City: Plans, Politics, and People, “New Town” Beginnings and How the "New Town" Grew, is available at dlg.usg.edu/collection/frrls-pt_ newtown and contains prospectuses, master plans, maps, conceptual drawings, newsletters, and administrative records dating from the 1950s to 2007.  Rebecca Watts, the librarian for the Joel Cowan History Room at Peachtree City Library, 3Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2020described the importance of these resources: “these materials will provide land planners, city planners, and those interested in how a city like Peachtree City came to be, with insight on its beginnings and early history, when the city was devoted to slow growth in an effort to keep a balance between industry, residential, and community amenities.”  Ellen Ulken, the co-author of Peachtree City: Images of America (Arcadia Publishing, 2009) noted: “I found the city’s early newsletters invaluable for tracking down stories, photos of people, issues, and progress of the early 1970s. I feel certain that the next person to come along and write a history of Peachtree City will be glad if this material is available and findable online. The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce the launch of a brand-new website featuring historic newspaper titles from around the state. Georgia Historic Newspapers (GHN), available at: http://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/  Since 2007, the Digital Library of Georgia has been providing access to the state’s historic newspapers through multiple, online city and regional newspaper archives. The DLG’s newest website, Georgia Historic Newspapers (GHN), continues that tradition by bringing together new and existing resources into a single, consolidated website.   “Historic newspapers provide a unique look at our state over time. They are invaluable to scholars and the general public alike as they provide in-depth coverage of Georgia counties and cities, report on the activities of state and local government, and reflect the social and cultural values of the time that they were created. By far, they are DLG’s most popular resources,” remarked Sheila McAlister, director of the Digital Library of Georgia. “We’re grateful for the assistance of our partners as we continue to add new content and improve how our users interact with these important historic documents.”  The GHN includes some of the state’s earliest newspapers; important African-American, Roman Catholic, and Cherokee newspapers; and issues from Augusta, Atlanta, Columbus, Fayetteville, Houston County, Louisville, Thomson, Sandersville, Waycross, and Waynesboro. The latest additions bring the total number of newspaper pages available free online through the DLG to 825,000 pages.  Like the older DLG newspaper sites, GHN provides newspaper issues that are full-text searchable and can be browsed by date and title.   Features of the new site include:  • Essays about the publishing history of various newspaper titles,  • Browsing by region (corresponding to regions of older sites), and  • Browsing by types that include community papers, papers-of-record, African-American papers, religious papers, school papers, or Native American papers. All previously digitized newspapers are scheduled to be incorporated into the new GHN platform. Milledgeville and the South Georgia historic newspapers are slated to be integrated into GHN next. Since 2007, the DLG has partnered with universities, archives, public libraries, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions to digitize historical newspapers from around the state. The archive is free and open for public use.  New Grant Program Seeks to Increase Digital Participation  The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the Johnny Mize Collection at Piedmont College, and town films and home movies at the University of Georgia media archives are among nine Competitive Digitization grants awarded through a new program with the Digital Library of Georgia.  “The projects selected for DLG’s inaugural subgranting program represent the diverse history of the state. Our partners for these projects also reflect the wealth of cultural heritage organizations in the state” said Sheila McAlister, director of the Digital Library of Georgia.  These are the first grants awarded in the program intended to broaden partner participation in the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG). The DLG solicited proposals for historic digitization projects in a statewide call, and applicants submitted proposals for projects with a cost of up to $5,000. The projects will be administered by DLG staff who will perform digitization and descriptive services on textual (not including newspapers), graphic, and audio-visual materials.  Preference in the selection process was given to proposals from institutions that had not yet collaborated with the DLG. The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace and Piedmont College Library are new partners for the DLG.  The nine recipients and their projects include:  • Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace (Savannah) - Digitization and description of “Juliette Gordon Low Correspondence, Series India Letters.” Juliette Gordon Low traveled in northern India in 1908 and wrote 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 54, Iss. 4 [2017], Art. 18https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol54/iss4/18letters to her family describing her experiences and impressions. • City of Savannah, Research Library & Municipal Archives - Digitization and description of “Record Series 3121-019, Savannah Cadastral Survey—Ward Survey Maps, 1939–1940” (Ward Survey Maps were prepared by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as part of a survey project); “Record Series 3121-020, Engineering Department—Major Subdivision Maps, 1871–1972, no date” (Major Subdivision Maps include maps of Savannah neighborhoods and subdivisions prepared by surveyors and engineers submitted to the City of Savannah Engineering Department); “Record Series 3121-007, Engineering Department—General Maps, 1798–1961, no date” (maps illustrating property holdings, land subdivision, and private development in Savannah from the 18th–20th centuries). • Atlanta History Center - Digitization of recordings of the radio program Southwind: The New Sounds of the Old Confederacy, which aired on WABE in Atlanta between Nov. 14, 1980 and Jan. 29, 1987. • Valdosta State University Archives and Special Collections - Digitization of the Pinebranch, the first student publication of South Georgia State Normal College and Georgia State Woman’s College (both earlier names for Valdosta State University). • Piedmont College Library (Demorest, Georgia) - Description of the “May Ivie Valise Collection” (a case full of historical materials belonging to Piedmont College alumna May Ivie), Johnny Mize Collection (fan letters and photographs belonging to professional baseball player and Demorest, Georgia native Johnny Mize). • Columbus State University Archives - Digitization and description of the Civil War era material of General Henry Benning, a prominent Confederate general and Georgia Supreme Court justice for whom Fort Benning was named. • Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection (Athens, Georgia) - Enhanced description of Georgia town films and home movies digitized by the Brown Media Archives. • Berry College (Mount Berry, Georgia) - Digitization of January 1907 to Winter 1942–1943 issues of the Southern Highlander, the official magazine of the Berry Schools. • Athens-Clarke County Library (Athens, Georgia) - Digitization and description of Image magazine, a publication that documented the everyday lives of the African American citizens of Athens, from 1977–1980.  Based at the University of Georgia Libraries, the Digital Library of Georgia is a GALILEO initiative that collaborates with Georgia's libraries, archives, museums, and other institutions of education and culture to provide access to key information resources on Georgia history, culture, and life. Digital Library of Georgia  Historic Georgian African American Newspapers Dating from 1886–1926  The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce that it has completed the digitization of two historically significant Georgia African American newspapers as part of a National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The digital images will be included in the Library of Congress’s newspaper site: Chronicling America, http://chroniclingamerica. loc.gov/ and the DLG’s own site: Georgia Historic Newspapers (GHN), http://gahistoric newspapers.galileo.usg.edu/.  “NEH grants help strengthen and sustain American cultural life, in communities, at museums, libraries, and historic sites, and in classrooms,” said former NEH Chairman Jon Parrish Peede. “As the nation prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary in 2026, NEH is proud to help lay the foundations for public engagement with America’s past by funding projects that safeguard cultural heritage and advance our understanding of the events, ideas, and people that have shaped our nation.”   The newspapers include:  • Savannah Tribune, 1886–1888 - Founded in 1875, the Tribune, with the exception of two hiatuses, is one of the longest-running African American 1Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2021newspapers in the South.   • Athens Republique, 1921–1924 - From 1919 until its cessation in 1927, the Republique served the African American community in Athens and surrounding towns.  The GHN website also includes several other African American newspaper titles published in Georgia, ranging from 1867–2018, that were digitized as part of previous grant-funded projects. These titles can be browsed through at https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/types/#africanamerican. African American newspapers from across the country can be found in the Chronicling America website at https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/?state=&ethnicity=African+American.  Issues of the Georgia Bulletin, the Weekly Newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta  In conjunction with Digital Library of Georgia’s (DLG) partners at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Georgia Bulletin (1963–1980) is now available for viewing at the Georgia Historic Newspapers website. These newspapers will contribute to broader scholarship about Catholicism in Atlanta as well as in Georgia. The Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive web site provides access to these newspapers, enabling full text searching and browsing by date and title. The site is compatible with all current browsers, and the newspaper page images can be viewed without the use of plug-ins or additional software downloads. The archive is free and open for public use.  In the first issue of the Georgia Bulletin, published on January 4, 1963, Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan, the first archbishop for the newly elevated Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, remarked that “the religious press is not intended to be a ‘house organ’ or a ‘trade sheet.’ Its whole reason for being is that it might enter the community bearing light and courage—light enough to expose society’s ills as well as its strengths; courage enough to inspire justice and charity in those who might falter along the path.”  Angelique M. Richardson, the director of archives and records for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta emphasized that “by making these digitized issues of our diocesan newspaper available to the public through the Georgia Historic Newspapers Project, we greatly hope that these words inspire researchers to learn more about the history of Catholics in North Georgia. We would never have been able to accomplish a project like this on our own.”  To fight Catholic prejudice and resist the spread of false information regarding Catholic beliefs and history, the Catholic Laymen's Association (CLA) of Georgia was founded in 1916.  The CLA published pamphlets that explained Catholic beliefs for several years before establishing the Bulletin of the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia in January of 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 58, Iss. 3 [2021], Art. 11https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol58/iss3/111920. The Bulletin ran as a monthly newspaper out of Augusta until 1956 when the organization changed the name to the Bulletin of the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia, Official Newspaper for the Diocese of Savannah & Atlanta; this change coming after the diocese divided into two regions: Atlanta and Savannah.  For a few months in early 1958, the Diocese of Savannah published the Savannah Bulletin before the Bulletin began circulating two editions for Savannah and Atlanta through 1962. In 1963, the publication split into two separate diocesan papers, the Georgia Bulletin (Archdiocese of Atlanta) and the Southern Cross (Diocese of Savannah). The CLA disbanded in 1962, but the Georgia Bulletin continued publication as the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.  Historic Holiday Menus Created at the Former Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia from 1925–1940   The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) has partnered with the 6th Cavalry Museum to digitize its collection of historic holiday menus created at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia from 1925–1940, thanks to a digitization grant awarded by the DLG. The collection is available at https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/scm_scthm.  Holiday menus combine economic, cultural, and social histories of holidays, as well as food and cooking history. Some of these menus also include rosters of US military personnel, as well as guests and family members. In some cases, the menus include a “year in review” section, providing key insights that are not offered elsewhere in materials held by the 6th Cavalry Museum.  These materials have proved to be particularly helpful to genealogists who have made use of them as a source of historical information, thanks in part to rosters recorded inside of the menus. Food historians will be able to consult these resources for a history of food or a study of ritualized meals, and menu highlights provide critical information about military life and help provide a better understanding of the loss, change, and growth that took place during the 1920s and 1930s. Camilla Canty, a family historian doing research on her family, noted that “my father joined the 6th Cavalry for officer’s training in 1940 at Fort Oglethorpe and eventually attained the rank of Major by the end of World War II. Fort Oglethorpe held special memories for my parents because they met there when my father was in training and my mother worked for Col. James Troutt in the Office of the Surgeon.”  The 6th Cavalry Museum preserves the rich military history of the Fighting Sixth Cavalry, the former Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia (1902–1946), and the Third Women's Army Corps Training Center. Located on the Post’s original parade ground, the area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, surrounded by officer’s homes and other Post buildings. The Digital Library of Georgia and the New Georgia Encyclopedia Collaborating on a New, Online Exhibit Site that Amplifies Often Untold and Hidden Georgia History.  Georgia Exhibits used materials drawn from 25 Georgia libraries, archival institutions, and museums, whose collections are available through the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG). With these resources, curators examined the history of race relations in Forsyth County, Georgia’s use of convict labor, and newspaper journalism in the state.  “Georgia Exhibits promises to shed new light on understudied corners of the state’s history,” said Edward Hatfield, managing editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia (NGE). “What’s more, it showcases the remarkable depth of collections offered through the Digital Library of Georgia.”  DLG and NGE staff and graduate student interns spent over a year and hundreds of hours curating the exhibitions to explore Georgia’s history and to showcase valuable content available from partners. New exhibits are planned for twice yearly.  Digital Library of Georgia Awards at National History Day  The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) has awarded Source Recognition Digital Certificates and Outstanding Use of the Digital Library of Georgia Resources Special Awards to history students participating in National History Day Georgia, a program of Georgia Humanities and LaGrange College that encourages middle and high school students to engage more deeply in the historical process. 2021’s theme was “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” The Digital Library of Georgia partnered with Georgia Humanities to create the special awards designed to engage students in historical research using DLG resources and to recognize the best examples of student work. Source recognition digital certificates were awarded to students who incorporated primary sources found in DLG’s portals into their projects. DLG staff conferred the Outstanding Use of the Digital Library of Georgia Resources special award on exceptional junior and senior individual and group projects.  Sheila McAlister, director of the Digital Library of Georgia, said: "Our partnership with Georgia Humanities and National History Day Georgia is one of our most rewarding. Through National History Day Georgia, students have the opportunity to deeply connect with DLG resources as they critically and creatively address their chosen topics and theses. Their work is always impressive, and it’s a pleasure to recognize such excellence."  The certificates were distributed after the National History Day Georgia 2021 held its virtual award ceremony on April 21, 2021. Digital Library of Georgia  Valdosta State University Archives Map and Plat Collections Now Available Online  Three map and plat collections featuring historical maps, plats, deeds, records, and correspondence pertaining to South Georgia land holdings dating from 1767 to 1899 are now available in the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG).  These resources belong to Valdosta State University Archives. They have been made available online thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.   The three digital collections include:  • Deeds and Plats, Georgia, available at dlg.usg.edu/collection/valdosta_ms18, consisting of residential and commercial deeds, plats, maps, and other documents from counties and towns, mostly in southeast Georgia, dating from 1767 to 1899.  • Deeds, Camden County, Georgia, available at dlg.usg.edu/collection/ valdosta_ms21, which includes deeds, plats, land grants, and legal documents dating from 1833 to 1899 regarding land in Camden County, Georgia, and northern Florida.  • John Adam Treutlen, June 1767, available at dlg.usg.edu/collection/ valdosta_ms165, a land grant dated June 1767 assigned by King George III of England conveying 400 acres of land in the parish of Saint Matthew, Georgia to John Adam Treutlen, Georgia’s first elected governor.  Digitization, description, and online access to these collections provide historical value to Georgia genealogists, and researchers of South Georgia and its development.   John G. Crowley, associate professor in the Department of History at Valdosta State University noted:  Materials such as these are invaluable to genealogists and historians. They reveal patterns of land use, settlement, industrial development, and those involved in such enterprises. For the genealogist, land records are a source of general background information on individuals and families, establish patterns of movement and employment, and often reveal family relationships otherwise unknown or unproven. Southern historians, local historians, and genealogists both amateur and professional will profit enormously from improved access to this material.  Chris Meyers, professor of history at Valdosta State University stated that “the collections to be digitized represent what a genealogist would consider a prized find. Deed records fill significant gaps in genealogical research and making these records available to all, through digitization, represents a significant service to all genealogists.”   Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Select Georgia Towns and Cities Dating From 1923–1941 Now Available for Free Online  The Digital Library of Georgia has just made Sanborn fire insurance maps produced between 1Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 20201923–1941 for 39 Georgia towns and cities in 35 counties freely available online. The maps, which are now in the public domain, can be retrieved at dlg.usg.edu/collection/dlg_sanb and complement the DLG’s existing collection of the University of Georgia Map and Government Information Library’s 539 Sanborn maps dating from 1884–1922 that have been available since 2005. The DLG has also upgraded its image viewer, which will allow better access and improved navigation to the new and older Sanborn images from this collection.   Sanborn maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining fire hazards for properties by outlining the construction of buildings and their elements, as well as the location of water facilities, house and block numbers, and the names of streets. They have proven useful in researching urban growth and decline, urban planning design, and the historic use of buildings in a city.   Cari Goetcheus, associate professor in the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia noted:   Sanborn maps are a wonderful snapshot of place in time from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Originally created by insurance companies to understand building materials in cities so they could decide what and how to insure the built environment, these maps offer much more than that by providing insight into Georgia’s diverse cultural, political, social, economic, and geographic history. For example, my students and I have most recently been using Athens Sanborn maps to document land-use change in an area known as Hot Corner, the historically black business district of Athens from the late 1800s to the 1970s.  Valerie Glenn, librarian and head of the University of Georgia’s Map and Government Information Library noted:   Because the maps contain such rich details, they provide a clear picture of a town as it existed—culturally, socially, economically, geographically. Users can see how many banks, or theatres, or piano stores existed; the “colored” schools and churches; and the distance between the river and the cigar factory. Over time this makes it easier for users to, for example, identify changes to historically African American neighborhoods in a given town or see the development, expansion, and/or decline of a central business district.  Digitization of City Directories for Albany, Georgia, Dating From 1922–1950.  New online records are now available for people researching their families in Albany, Georgia. The Digital Library of Georgia has just added a collection of city directories housed at the Dougherty County Public Library, dating from 1922–1950. The collection, Albany, Georgia City Directories, is available at dlg.usg.edu/collection/zgn_albcd and contains 11 directories covering Albany during 2Georgia Library Quarterly, Vol. 57, Iss. 2 [2020], Art. 13https://digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/glq/vol57/iss2/13intermittent years from 1922 to 1950, and one 1937 directory from Americus.  City directories existed before telephone directories and often listed the names, addresses, occupations, and ethnicities of people in American towns and cities. Because they contain so much detailed information, they are vital resources for researchers, genealogists, and the general public. According to the Library of Congress, city directories "are among the most important sources of information about urban areas and their inhabitants. They provide personal and professional information about a city's residents as well as information about its business, civic, social, religious, charitable, and literary institutions."  Christina Shepherd, head of reference for the Dougherty County Public Library described the relevance of Albany’s city directories to the researchers in her library:   Several patrons have asked to use the directories to see who lived in their house, to trace an ancestor’s life, verifying use of land, or to see who ran what businesses. A specific example is in 1940 there was a tornado that came through and destroyed a lot of downtown Albany. While these directories do not show that event, they show the city stayed strong after that event. The directories have the addresses where businesses were before the tornado in 1939 to where they had to relocate in 1941. Just think, those directories were the same books that our relatives, our city leaders, and others used to find an address or phone number!  J. Douglas Porter, a writer based in Albany, Georgia noted:  Much of the material I have been looking at has been digitized and is searchable. This has not only been a useful time-saver, but it has also proven to be more reliable than my visual scans of many pages of materials. The city directories have a high level of historic value and potential for reuse by multiple audiences well into the future. The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce that, in conjunction with the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library, several student newspapers from Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College are now available for viewing at the Georgia Historic Newspapers web site at 30TUhttps:// gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.eduU30T. These resources are part of the “Our Story”: Digitizing Publications and Photographs of the Historically Black Atlanta University Center Institutions project, administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)’s Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives awards program, which is supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.   When studying historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), patrons will find these newspapers beneficial for interdisciplinary examinations of African American achievement, African American leadership, and student life. These publications are significant, in that they were a means of self-expression for African American students to convey their opinions of college life and society within a forum that validated their thoughts and opinions. Digitization of these publications could significantly increase the scholarship written about the AUC, enable patrons to enhance the historical record, and contribute to a more comprehensive narrative through the representation of the under-documented. Christine Wiseman, head, Digital Services Department at Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library stated:  Through the “Our Story” project, the AUC Woodruff Library has significantly expanded the breadth and depth of resources available about the history of the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs. Without support from CLIR and project partners, an initiative of this scale would not be possible. Making these student newspapers available online for students, scholars, and the general public should contribute to the narrative and research on the history of African American higher education and its impact on society. The paper focused on matters concerning Spelman College and the Atlanta University Center. Within the pages of the Spotlight, one could find news related to faculty, student government, and campus life. The Spotlight briefly became the Spelman Bulletin for the November 1958 and March 1959 issues before returning to its previous title. In November of 1959, The Spotlight underwent a redesign. As the Spotlight settled into its new format, the topics it covered expanded beyond the range of Spelman College and included news related to the American Civil Rights Movement. In 2013, the Spotlight became the BluePrint. The BluePrint continues today as a student-run publication at Spelman College.  Campus Mirror  https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/lccn/sn38019897/   The Campus Mirror was first published in October 1924 as a monthly publication managed and edited by the students of Spelman College. The paper featured editorials, campus news, events, speeches, local advertisements featuring African American-owned businesses, and photographs of classes and organizations that document African American female leadership, and the experiences of African American women pursuing higher education from the 1920s to the 1950s.   In addition to its news coverage, literary works by students and advice for interviews or studying could be found in the Mirror's pages. A special commencement issue was published at the end of each academic year. These issues included photographs and covered the graduating and incoming classes, making the publication an important genealogical resource. The newspaper's final issue circulated in May 1950 after 26 years of covering campus life.   Clark Atlanta University Panther  https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/lccn/sn39724533/  The Panther was a monthly newspaper published by Clark College students during the academic year. In 1972, the student government chose Frank W. Johnson Jr. as editor-in-chief. Under Johnson’s leadership, the paper began to feature political and social issues beyond the confines of Clark College. In an April 1973 issue, Johnson announced that the Panther would expand coverage to include grassroots efforts in areas such as welfare, prison reform, black politics, police brutality, liberation movements in Africa, and other topics of the day. Also found in those 1970s issues are calls for student submissions, guest editorials, and statements from school administration.  Wolverine Observer https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/lccn/sn54110460/   The Wolverine Observer was a student-run publication serving Morris Brown College and its community under the direction of Professor V. C. Clinch. By the 1960s, the Observer was a member of the Intercollegiate Press (later the Associated Collegiate Press) and was largely run by the students themselves. The Observer sought to report news of interest to the Morris Brown College community and featured student editorials throughout its pages.  Holly A. Smith, college archivist, Women's Research & Resource Center at Spelman College said:   The Campus Mirror is an amazing publication that many researchers outside of the Spelman community might not be aware of. The site is compatible with all current browsers and the newspaper page images can be viewed without the use of plug-ins or additional software downloads. These resources belong to the University of West Georgia Special Collections and have been made available online thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.   Carroll County Georgia Cemeteries is a guide to cemeteries in the western (volume 1) and eastern (volume 2) parts of the county published by the Carroll County Genealogical Society. Together they provide transcriptions of names as they appear on tombstones within the 292 cemeteries located in Carroll County. The digitization of these volumes makes family names keyword searchable, which greatly aids researchers’ ability to perform genealogical research in their own homes and other settings.  3Mastrovita: News - Digital Library of GeorgiaPublished by DigitalCommons@Kennesaw State University, 2019The Carroll County Genealogical Quarterly (1980–present) is another publication of the Carroll County Genealogical Society that compiles, collects, and creates genealogical information for Carroll County, Georgia. The University of West Georgia’s Ingram Library’s Special Collections has a complete set of these newsletters in which members have written articles on their research into various aspects of the county’s history, which includes information on the land lottery of 1827, Carroll County’s old militia districts, early post offices and postmasters, early settlers and marriages, rural churches and cemeteries, family histories and genealogies, wills and family records transcribed from bibles, census records, ownership of enslaved people of African descent, military history, tax digests, and more. The Carroll County Genealogical Quarterly is an invaluable resource that can be used in learning, teaching, and research of Carroll County history by students, genealogists, local historians, and descendants of Carroll County who live outside of the area.  Keith Bohannan, a professor in the department of history at the University of West Georgia noted:  The books and periodicals being digitized were only published in small numbers and are not easily available to the public outside of the county library or Georgia State Archives. The resources being digitized will be very helpful to people both inside and outside of the community doing genealogical or historical research.
