The article reports on the revisions made in the list of best books on the Indians of North America in Georgia at the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library. The list was compiled by retired librarian Louise S. White in collaboration with the members of the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA)

But therearen’t many printed materials on this topic. Before Iretired from the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, I noticedthat many kids came in wanting such material. So in 1997I made a list of what was in print:The Best Books in Print about The Indians ofGeorgia for students in grades K-8: Cherokee,Creek (also called Muscogee; sometimes calledthe Creek Confederacy), and Mound Builders(prehistoric people, also called Mississippians),Compiled by Louise S. White in collaborationwith members of GLMA (Georgia Library MediaAssociation).I have revised it, updated it, and self-published it everyAugust since then — also I have distributed copies everyyear at COMO, always asking for corrections andadditions. It’s reallyquicker to go to Google and ask for “Best books in print,Indians of Georgia.” The list is only seven pages on paper— with 10 more pages on the web for title and author-editor indexes.For adult books, see the short list of very basic adult bookson page 9, under the heading “Background reading forteachers, media specialists, parents, and other adults.”The books “Grade 8 and up reading level,” beginningpage 7, are also quite suitable for adult reading. Bede Mitchell has beenelected vice president/president-elect of the nationalprofessional organization LAMA (Library Administrationand Management Association), a division of ALA. Martinez appointed liaison at EmoryIda Martinez has been appointed Social Sciences Liaisonfor the General Libraries of Emory University. PreviouslyIda was selected as a Library Fellow at Cornell Universityin a two-year program and after one year was appointedas Outreach Librarian. She received her MLIS fromDominican University and her BA in psychology andbusiness from the University of Notre Dame. Emory’s Matthews retires after 35 yearsDr. Linda Matthews retired in August after 35 years at theEmory University Libraries. Matthews came to Emory as areference archivist in 1971 after earning her doctorate inAmerican history from Duke University. She has a master’sfrom Duke in that subject and a bachelor’s in history fromWinthrop College in her native South Carolina. In 1977,she earned a master’s degree in library science from Emory.She became director of the Special Collections andArchives Division in 1982 and was appointed vice provostand director of libraries in September 2003. Whilepreviously geared toward Southern literature and historyand other early Americana, underMatthews’ guidance, Emory’s holdingsexpanded to include some of thefinest collections of English-languageliterature, particularly Irish poetry, andAfrican-American history and culture.Emory Provost Earl Lewis noted,“What distinguishes Linda in a verydistinguished field is her ability tocombine the old and the new. Sheunderstands the importance of the print culture, arguingforcibly for expanding the manuscripts and rare bookscollections and building capacities in a variety of fields. Atthe same time, she knows the significance of leading inthe area of digital publishing and understands the needto develop the library with an eye on the future… I willtreasure forever being able to say that I worked with oneof the best of the best.”In May 2006 Matthews was awarded the Governor’sAward in the Humanities. “Dr. Matthews has workeddiligently to sustain the unique character of Georgia,”noted Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue. She wasrecognized for “creative leadership and careful steward-ship that has expanded Emory’s [library] collections andmade the university a national and internationaldestination for humanities researchers.” It’s a nice cap towhat has been a remarkable career.
