The Library currently provides access to 4,000 electronicfull-text journals, 2,500 unique print journals,over 100 databases and 338,000 books.LOCATION & PARKINGThe Library is located on the first floor of the Jesse H. Jones Library Building in the TexasMedical Center at 1133 John Freeman Blvd.Short-term parking (20 minutes) is available infront of the Library. Long term parking is avail-able in Garage 3 underneath the building.LIBRARY CARDSFaculty, students and staff from all Texas MedicalCenter institutions, as well as members of the HarrisCounty Medical Society, are eligible for Library cards.Associate memberships are available to individualsand institutions that are unaffiliated with the TexasMedical Center. Health care providers who are notcard-holders can receive some services through ouraffiliation with the National Network of Libraries ofMedicine/South Central Region. The databaseuses color, graphics, soundsand animation to convey con-nections between chemicals,the environment, and the pub-lic’s health. Tox Town offers thefollowing information:• Facts on everyday locationswhere toxic chemicals might be found • Information about how the environment can affect human health • Non-technical descriptions of chemicals • Links to authoritative chemical information on the Internet • Internet resources on environmental health topics Tox Town’s target audienceis students above elementary-school level, educators and thegeneral public. It is a companionto the extensive information inthe TOXNET collection of data-bases that are typically used bytoxicologists and health profes-sionals. Tox Town’s chemicaland environmental informationcomes from the TOXNET andMEDLINEplus resources ofNLM, and other authoritativesources. Chemical descriptionsare based on TOXNET and otherresources and are reviewed byNLM toxicology staff.Tox Town can be accessed at:http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/main.htmlAwardshe National Library of Medicine has awarded an Information Access Grant to Texas Woman’s University(TWU) to develop and implement the“Informing Neighborhood Health” project.This is a collaborative effort involving TWU,the Houston Academy of Medicine-TexasMedical Center Library and five local faith-based clinics that primarily serve the home-less and working poor. The clinics includeSan Jose Clinic, Bering Omega CommunityServices, Good Neighbor Healthcare Center,Eastwood Health Clinic, and NorthwestAssistance Ministries. Funds from the awardwill be used to place Internet-connected work-stations at each clinic to facilitate access toelectronic health information. Training on useof electronic information resources will beprovided for staff members at each clinic.
