EATON NAMEDEXECUTIVE DIRECTORElizabeth K. Eaton, PhD, has accepted theposition of Executive Director of theHAMTMC Library.  She will beginNovember 19, 2001.  Dr. Eaton was bornin New York City, and lived in Germanywhile her father was with the StateDepartment.  Afterwards they  returned toTolland, CT to live on their 200 year oldfamily farm.  She graduated from HoodCollege, Frederick, MD, received herMLS from UCLA, and her PhD from theBiomedical Sciences Department of theUniversity of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.  She was the AssociateDirector for Public Services at UTMBs Moody Medical Library from 1973-1982.Dr. Eaton became Director of Tufts University Health Sciences Library inBoston in 1982.  She was instrumental in the redesign and modernization of thenew Library building, opened in 1986.  Since then, the print collection has beenaugmented with a 21st century electronic collection; information technology hasbeen integrated into the education, research and patient care missions of theschools and teaching hospitals; and the Library has become the centerpiece ofan integrated, university-wide system.Dr. Eaton also has served as a faculty facilitator in the Tufts University Schoolof Medicine Problem Based Learning Program, has published/presentedseveral papers on this topic, and was the Course Director for New Technologiesin the Tufts/Emerson Health Communications Program.  In 1993, as co-PI onthe Tufts Health Campus/National Library of Medicines IAIMS planninggrant, she helped lead a strategic planning effort.The HAMTMC Board of Directors and Library staff welcome Dr. Eaton andare looking forward to working with her.Dr. Elizabeth K. Eaton and Dr. Kathryn Stream,Chair of the Library Board of Directors2The HAM–TMC Library’s remote access service (RAS), which was destroyed in the flooding caused byTropical Storm Allison, was reintroduced on September 3, 2001.  The new RAS is being implemented inphases, with the first phase restricted to faculty, residents, fellows, students, and staff at selected TMCeducational institutions.Publisher restrictions make it impossible for us to provide access to all electronic resources to all library users.The new RAS takes heed of this reality.  In the first phase of implementation, the RAS will be made available toindividuals at the TMC institutions included in the University of Texas System Digital Library, through whichwe get many of our online subscriptions:• Baylor College of Medicine• Institute of Biosciences and Technology of Texas A&M University• Prairie View A&M College of Nursing• Texas Woman’s University – Houston• University of Texas Health Science Center – HoustonIn the second phase, the RAS will be implemented for individuals associated with other TMC institutions.These individuals are not eligible to access UT System Digital Library titles but they are permitted to useresources, such as MDConsult, that the HAM–TMC Library has licensed directly.  Remote access for patronsnot affiliated with any TMC institution will be provided in the third phase.  They will be allowed to access titlesfor which there are no restrictions in terms of institutional affiliation.The HAM–TMC Library’s new remote access works with both Internet Explorer and Netscape and does notrequire you to configure your browser.  Those who wish to use the new remote access service – includinganyone who was registered for the pre-Allison remote access service – will need to register.What you will need:• A current HAM–TMC Library card http://library.tmc.edu/privileg.html• An e-mail address from one of the above named institutions (Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo and other non-institutional e-mail addresses are NOT acceptable)How to Register for Remote Access:Register by filling out the online form http://www.library.tmc.edu/ras.html. When you submit this form, yourHAM–TMC Library card number will be validated and you will be added to the database of registered remoteaccess users.  This may take up to two business days.Once you have registered, your username will be your e-mail address and your password will be the last fourdigits of your HAM–TMC Library card.  You will not be contacted by the HAM–TMC Library unless there is aproblem with your registration.PHASED IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW REMOTE ACCESSSERVICEThe HAM–TMC Library is investigating the possibility of providing access to our entire electronic collection(including titles obtained through the UT System Digital Library) to a wider spectrum of our cardholders. However,there is no guarantee that we will be able to achieve this goal. If you have questions or problems, please contact us at: hiec@library.tmc.edu3PHOTOCOPY/INTERLIBRARY LOAN (PC/ILL) SERVICESGLOBAL ACCESSThe Photocopy/Interlibrary Loan (PC/ILL) Department is located on the second floor of the HAM–TMCLibrary.  The hours of operation are 8:00 am - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.  The goal of this department is tolocate and acquire research material that is not part of the Library’s collection and to provide photocopyservice for items owned by the Library.  Presently, requests may be submitted in person, by fax (713-790-7056), email (tmcariel@library.tmc.edu) or the National Library of Medicine’s online ordering system,Loansome Doc.PC/ILL services include three main segments:      • Interlibrary Loan Borrowing—acquiring photocopies and books from lending institutions• Interlibrary Loan  Lending–supplying photocopies and loan books to other libraries• Photocopy Services—copying articles from journals in the HAM–TMC Library collectionSince January of this year, the PC/ILL department has processed 3,549 ILLrequests; 5,309 photocopy requests; 6,101 Loansome Doc requests; and supplied12,036 photocopies and loans to other libraries.  The PC/ILL Department makesevery effort to secure materials through the various consortia and reciprocalarrangements to minimize the cost.  About 70% of interlibrary loan requests areborrowed from reciprocal or consortia libraries, which means lower costs to ourusers.When a cardholder needs a copy of an article from a journal which is at the bindery, damaged or missing fromthe shelf, the cardholder will not be charged for Interlibrary Loan service necessary to obtain the material.Additional information about fees can be found at http://library.tmc.edu/fees.html.Because of the volume of requests processed daily and sometimes urgent nature of many requests, certainprotocols need to be observed when submitting requests.  Please submit a legible and completed requestform for each item needed, indicating the preferred delivery and payment methods.  At this time, onlyfaculty from the University of Texas Houston Health Sciences Center, Baylor College of Medicine, HarrisCounty Medical Society physicians, and fee-based clients will be invoiced. Others will need to pick up and payupon receipt of the item. If the request has a rush status, please speak with someone in the department.  Themore complete and accurate the form, the faster the request can be processed.The Library now receives over 90% of requested materials via Ariel©, a document transmission system whichuses the Internet.  Using Ariel©, greatly improves the delivery turnaround time.  The turnaround time forarticles has decreased from an average of 7-10 working days to about 2-3 working days.  Ariel© is faster,more reliable, and less expensive to use than the fax and produces images of greater resolution and quality.When a patron elects for delivery by email, documents can be forwarded as PDF files to a web server wherethe patron can access the article from his/her own computer. The document will reside on the server for fivedays or five views.  The software program that makes this possible is called Prospero.The Library continues to meet the increased demand for information.
