OREGON 1990 OREGON VINEYARD REPORT AGRICULTIJRAL STATISTICS SERVICE Janua 18 19 1 OREGON WINE GRAPE PRODUCTION DOWN Oregon production of wine grapes in 1990 decreased for the third year running, yet harvested area increased 500 acres from 1989. The latest harvest produced 7,000 tons of grapes, 6 percent less than 1989 and 10 percent less than 1988. Acres harvested, at 3,900, were up 15 percent from each of the last two years. Statewide yields averaged 1. 79 tons per acre, down 0.40 tans per acre from last year. White Riesling showed the largest drop in yield, falling 41 percent to 1.80 tons per acre. Pi not Nair also had a precipitous yield decline, falling 23 percent to 1.55 tons per acre. Chardonnay had a 4 percent yield increase to 2.08 tons per acre. Washington, Jackson and Yamhill counties reported the largest yield declines, falling 42, 37 and 33 percent, respectively. Total acreage planted to wine grapes in the State increased 8 percent to 5,682 acres. The South Willamette Valley, Yamhill County, and the East Willamette Valley had the largest increases with 29, 21 and 11 percent more acres, respectively. There were 571 newly planted acres during 1990. The number of Oregon vineyards also continued to increase, going from 310 in 1988 to 320 in 1989 and to 330 in 1990. The highest yielding variety in 1990, at 3.83 tons per acre, was Chenin Blanc, while the lowest yield, 1.20 tons per acre, was recorded for Merlot. The top three varieties remain, Chardonnay with 2,037 tons produced in 1990; Pinot Nair with 1,934 tons produced and White Riesling with 1,333 tons. Together these three varieties accounted for 76 percent of thi~ year's tonnage, 76 percent of harvested acres and 74 percent of total acres. Yamhill County remained Oregon's leading w1ne grape producer with a harvest of 1,732 tons from 890 acres in 1990. Polk remained the second leading county with 1,423 tons produced from 677 acres. Washington County maintained its third place ranking having harvested.855 tons from 661 acres. Morrow County was again the State 1 s fourth leading producer with 1990 production of 780 tons picked from 486 acres. Combined these four leading counties produced 68 percent of the 1990 crop and harvested 70 percent of Oregon's acres. They also accounted for 68 percent of total wine grape acreage in the State. Prices strengthened for the third consecutive year as the average value of the 1990 crop came to $800 per ton, up $60 from last year and $190 from two years ago. Value of production, at $5.6 million, is 2 percent above 1989 and 18 percent more than 1988. Estate winery and home use (1,800 tons) plus sales within Oregon (4,443 tons) amounted to 89 percent of 1990 wine grape production. Sales outside of the State went predominantly to Washington State (547 tons). The Oregon Agricultural Statistics Service, in cooperation with the Oregon Wine Advisory Board, the Oregon Winegrowers Association and the Oregon Department of Agriculture published this report. The results of this survey will also appear in the USDA report, Noncitrus Fruits and Nuts, 1990 Su111nary, on January 18, 1991.
