Bull Music Centerand that’s exactly how it should be.“Where music is made and musicis taught, life is not square,” saidRichard Bourassa with a smile as heshowed visitors through the newmusic center.With few square cornersand many walls slightly angled orcurved, the new center is designed toenhance the acoustics of the facultystudios, rehearsal spaces and the recitalhall. Bourassa should know the intri-cacies of the design. He is a professorof music, and as department chairfor 10 years, he was instrumental inplanning the new center. The excitement was almost palpa-ble among faculty and students alikewhen the center opened this fall.The new 14,000-square-foot building,opposite the Miller Fine Arts Center,houses faculty offices and studios, prac-tice rooms, a music library, a seminarroom, a band rehearsal room and arecital space with seating for 98. Itupdates instructional and practice facil-ities for the entire music program andprovides much-needed centralizedspace for faculty and students as well asa new venue for smaller recitals. It not only looks like a musicbuilding, but it feels like a musicbuilding, said Faun Tiedge, currentchair of the Linfield music program.Faculty studios are all on onelevel, and practice rooms and per-formance and rehearsal spaces areavailable in the building, which wasnot the case in Renshaw Hall, shesaid. Students didn’t have much spaceto gather in Renshaw, but thatchanges with the new center.“When students come into ourcentral lobby, they have more oppor-tunity to exchange ideas with facultyand other students,” Tiedge said.“There’s a vitality that we didn’texperience because we were morefragmented.”The new facility is rekindling anexcitement to connect with the liber-al arts and to find the meaning ofmusic in a liberal arts institution, shesaid.Having rehearsal, teaching andperformance spaces in one buildingwill enhance the students’ education,Tiedge noted, by encouraging moreinteraction among students and morecollaboration between students andfaculty. The new facility will also providemore flexibility for the department.Supplementing the newly renovatedRichard and Lucille Ice Auditorium(formerly Melrose Auditorium), thenew building’s Delkin Recital Hallprovides an intimate space for specialrecitals, small concerts and lectures orprograms from visiting artists.  TheWoolley Rehearsal Room providesmore space for both band and choirrehearsals and may allow moreoutreach by the music departmentinto the schools and local community.“Delkin (recital hall) is a veryexciting space, where we can bridgethe gap between audience andperformer,”Tiedge added. “We mighthave open rehearsals and invitecommunity members in where theycan see our students at work with ourdirectors.” The opening of the Bull Centercompletes the Arts Quadrangle on theKeck Campus which should enhancecollaboration among the arts, Tiedge said. “The proximity to the Arts Quadand the library, coupled with the newperformance spaces, has raised thelevel of plans for music making,”she said, adding that both she andBourassa have a strong interest increating new music which is interdis-ciplinary in nature. “So much of what we do isimprovisatory and impromptu,” shesaid. “Now we can tap into an artistright outside our building.
