Introduction • Consumers want to purchase products that will make their lives easier and work for long a long period of time.  • To do so, parts costs should be minimized without sacrificing operation. • Parts should be simplistic and strong enough to withstand elements. • Price of current models and area of application can be improved through this project. Act as a switch to the circuit.  •Half-wave rectifier consisting of diode-capacitor-resistor allows for timing control of voltage. Equation used t=RC •Transistor is needed to draw current through solenoid and create a magnetic field due to heavy load of the solenoid. •Solenoid is chosen as means to lock door due to fact it is made up of few moving parts.    Solenoid Testing of the Circuit and Magnet Circuit  • Test each circuit component after it was completed and before moving on to next component.  Magnet  • Use a hall probe to record magnetic field and distance at activation of the sensors.  Results and Analysis •With parts used, able to create a door under $50.  •Found that sensors were activated at 64± 10 gauss and not at a fixed distance. Conclusion and Improvements • Using the parts described an automatic pet door was created that works in the same fashion as those commercially available.  • Was able to show that sensors did not behave as listed on their companies data sheet. • To improve I would purchase different parts that would activate the circuit at a much greater distance and would allow better operation.  9 Volt Battery Reed Switch Diode 1000 μF Capacitor 15 kΩ Resistor 1.5 kΩ Resistor Transistor [1] [2] 

Automatic Pet Door and Magnetic Field Activation

Pet doors were initially created for the consumer that has a pet but does not want to hassle with letting the pet in and out of the house or allowing them access to food and shelter. The market has been flooded with automatic pet doors that are activated by a magnetic field, radio frequency or other activation signal. These doors are designed to be installed in a door or door frame. These doors, however, are very expensive, made of low-cost materials, and are limited in the places that they can be installed. Also, because they commonly use elaborate motors built with inexpensive parts, the motors often break and are unable to be replaced, forcing the consumer to purchase an entirely new apparatus. There is plenty of room for improvement. It is believed that simpler parts can be used more successfully and at a much lower cost to the consumer. As well, these doors should be able to be placed wherever the consumer would like: a barn wall, dog kennel, food box, shelter, etc. For this experiment it is hypothesized that a consistent source of activation will be used and that a working model within the above parameters will be built and operable. The goal is to create a product that can be easily understood by the consumer and would allow for the replacement and fixing of parts
