MIGRATE - MIGRation pATterns in Europe

Abstract

MIGRATE – MIGRation pATterns in Europe is a Web mapping gaming application aimed at educating and raising awareness about the phenomenon of migration in Europe. Although migration is an extremely important and urgent issue in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean area, there is still a lack of information and many misconceptions about the nature and extent of this phenomenon. Thus, MIGRATE seeks to raise awareness about migration while also studying and analyzing the degree of knowledge and perception of the general public. MIGRATE makes full use of open data and is fully developed using open source software. Playing MIGRATE requires an anonymous registration. Each game is composed of 6 questions of different kind: true/false, multiple choice, map-based (i.e. the player answers by clicking a country on the map) and text-based (i.e. the player answers by entering a number). Two out of the 6 questions are different depending on the player's country of origin which is defined during the registration phase. In addition, each of the 6 questions is randomly extracted from a predefined set of 20 questions so that when playing multiple times there is a low probability of being asked the same questions. For each question a limited time (30 seconds) is given to answer
