Basic professional training, a contribution to face the challenges of secondary education in Uruguay

Abstract

El artículo comienza por exponer brevemente los problemas que enfrenta Uruguay de abandono de la educación media. Enseguida se presenta una experiencia innovadora, la Formación Profesional Básica (FPB), se la describe en sus características principales, incluyendo logros, problemas y principales aportes innovadores, en términos de la educación uruguaya. Dada la escasa información global disponible sobre esta iniciativa, se analizan a continuación los aportes de varios estudios de caso sobre la FPB. Finalmente se discute la conveniencia de esta modalidad, considerando la evidencia planteada por estudios de la experiencia comparada y los desafíos que plantea la actual situación educativa nacionalThis article begins on a brief descrption of the problems Uruguay faces about secondary education dropout. Then an innovative experience is exposed called Basic Vocational Education (BVE). This experience is described in its main characteristics, including achievements, their problems and their main innovative contributions for the Uruguayan education. As the global information is limited available on this initiative, the contributions of several case studies on BVE are analysed. Finally, the suitability of this educational strategy was discussed with the evidence raised from studies of experiences and the challenges in the current national educational situatio
