Se realiza en este trabajo una interpretación del contenido semántico originario
del verbo latino petere, desligado por completo del sentido de su étimo indoeuropeo
(*pet-: ‘volar’), con el objetivo de penetrar en las posibles causas de la diversificación
significativa de este lexema. Para ello se propone la evolución semasiológica de
esa raíz indoeuropea, en su paso al latín de época histórica, en los términos de la
metáfora estructural ASPIRAR A UNA META ES VOLARThis paper presents an interpretation of the primitive semantic content of the
Latin verb petere, completely unrelated to the meaning of its Indoeuropean root
(*pet-: ‘to fly’). The objective of this analysis is to understand the possible causes
of the diversification of the meanings of this lexeme. In order to do this, I propose
the semantic evolution of this Indoeuropean root into the Latin language in terms
of the structural metaphor AIMING FOR A GOAL IS FLYIN
