Software-based Fast Failure Recovery in Load Balanced SDN-based Data Center Networks

Abstract

A mechanism to detect and manage failures in a datacenter network exploiting load balancing among equal cost multiple paths, based on active probing and without involving the centralized controller, was introduced. The proposed mechanism was deployed and validated on a data center-liked network test bed based on OpenFlow and consisting of several Open VSwitches controlled by a Ryu Controller. The experimental results successfully showed failure detection and recovery time of less than 5ms for probes produced every millisecond and around 10ms for probes produced each 2.5ms, without introducing scalability issues at the centralized controller
