Nesta linha, a presente
New technologies, the Internet and social networks are tools increasingly sought after by
children. They are currently starting to interact with digital media at an early age, as they
provide entertainment, easy communication, social interaction, sharing of common
experiences and interests, and help create affective bonds with other individuals.
However, the exposure of photos, videos and personal data on social networks can bring
about several risks and dangers. In this line, the present research entitled "Risks and
dangers of the Internet and social networks: conceptions of parents/carers and children of
the 1st and 2nd Cycles of Basic Education" started from the formulation of the question problem, "What is the knowledge on the part of children regarding the risks and dangers
of using the Internet, social networks and video games?" The objectives address
identifying the most frequent activities when children use the Internet and social
networks. Firstly, verifying the time spent by children using electronic devices, the
Internet, social networks, and video games. Secondly, understanding whether children are
aware of the risks and dangers of the Internet and social networks. Thirdly, understanding
whether there are tendencies of addictive behaviors. Fourthly, understanding whether
parents/guardians know how to identify and prevent risky and dangerous situations of the
Internet and social networks used by their children. Empirically, the methodology used is
quantitative and qualitative in nature, using a questionnaire survey as a data collection
instrument, which was completed by 111 respondents of both genders. The group of
participants is composed of, 1st and 2nd cycle students of the Northern Group of Schools
and their respective parents/guardians. The main results reveal that children use the
Internet and social networks on a daily basis, where the preferred place for using
electronic devices is in the bedroom and the preferred activities in virtual environments
is communicating with friends and other people through chat rooms. We also noticed that
children have risky behaviors and contact dangers when using the Internet and social
networks, because they disclose their personal data, exchange messages and make
appointments with strangers. Regarding parents/guardians, there is little control and
vigilance when their children use virtual environments and electronic devices
