Aflatoxin M1 formation and seasonal variationEsther Segarra AljamaJune 2016Objectives• See the biotransformation of the aflatoxin B1 to itsepoxy and to AFM1 in the animal, as there is arelation between the aflatoxin B1 which is ingestedby the animal and the presence of aflatoxin M1 inthe milk.• The main objective of this work is to check thepossible seasonal variations in the levels of aflatoxinpresent in the milk.The study is basically focussedon the winter and summer seasons as thetemperatures are more extreme on those periods andthere might be significant differences between bothseasons.BiotransformationFigure 2. Differences concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk between summer and winter.All results obtained by article, gave a significant difference (P <0.05) between summer and winter.R-x *,  means article where has been extracted the information .R-16 *, is article number 16 in the literature.Conclusions• Milk producers have to take extra carewith the feeding of their cows during thelactation period.• The animal can convert aflatoxin B1 indifferent metabolites depending on theenzyme which acts.• The rate of transformation of the aflatoxinM1 is variable with a maximum up to6,2% of the total of aflatoxin B1 ingestedby the animal.• The seasonal variation between summerand winter, I reached the conclusion thatthere is a clear pattern and theconcentration of aflatoxin M1 is higher inwinter than in summer season.• The seasonal pattern is due basically to theunhealthy feeding of the animals duringthe winter period where they eat manycontaminated foods with high levels ofaflatoxin B1.
