The idea for this issue came from the recognition thatbioinorganic chemistry research in Greece has been tremen-dously developed over the last three decades or so. Theobvious reason is that this period has seen significant changesto the Greek chemistry community. New Laws permittedindependent research by all the members of the academicstaﬀ, especially at the Lecturer and Assistant Professorpositions. Nowadays, all five chemistry departments in greekUniversities (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Ioannina, Crete)have strong research programs in bioinorganic chemistry.Bioinorganic chemistry was also developed in a brilliantway at three institutes in the National Center of ScientificResearch “Demokritos,” located in Athens. Many appoint-ments by the universities and “Demokritos” created newgenerations of scientists with their own research ideas anddirections, and they are currently helping to shape the futureof bioinorganic chemistry in Greece. Another importantreason for the progress of bioinorganic chemistry in Greecehas been the scientific impact and personality of ProfessorNick Hadjiliadis, the scientist who undoubtedly introducedbioinorganic chemistry to and pioneered research in this fieldin Greece. This special issue is devoted to him.Professor Nick Hadjiliadis retired in September 2008 (heis currently Emeritus Professor) after a brilliant academiccareer, mainly at the University of Ioannina, Ioannina,Greece. However, he continues to be involved in researchand other academic activities. His scientific and professionalachievements are numerous. He has carried out excellentresearch in at least four interesting areas of contemporarybioinorganic chemistry, holding an outstanding publicationrecord in peer-review journals and thematic books. Manyof his former Ph.D. students occupy academic or researchpositions in Greece. He has received international awardsand organized international conferences and meetings inGreece and abroad, including the very successful 5th Inter-national Symposium on Applied Bioinorganic Chemistry.He has established and directed for more than 10 years theprestigious interuniversity graduate programme “Bioinor-ganic Chemistry” in Greece. Finally, he was Editor-in-Chief of Bioinorganic Chemistry and Applications and otherbioinorganic chemistry books. His impact on the scientificcommunity goes far beyond the just mentioned aspects. Nickhad the ability to inspire many Greek inorganic chemists totry bioinorganic chemistry projects, often giving smart ideasto them. In addition to being an excellent scientist, Nick isalso a friendly and broadly educated person (but strict withhis collaborators when he was seeing them relaxing and beingout of the schedule) with whom it was a privilege for us to beassociated for the last 25–30 years.This issue contains 42 papers. There are contributionsfrom some of the scientists with whom Nick has beencollaborating and from his old students. However, there aremany contributions from researchers who gladly acceptedour invitation to participate as a means to show their respectfor the scientist and the man. Seventeen (17) papers areentirely from Greece, fifteen (15) contributions come fromforeign laboratories, and the rest (10) describe researchresulting from collaboration between Greek and foreignuniversities and institutes.We have attempted as far as possible to have this specialissue reflect research activities on currently “hot” topics ofbioinorganic chemistry [1] and the respect that ProfessorHadjiliadis commands through the scientific community2 Bioinorganic Chemistry and Applicationsin our country and internationally. The “hot” areas of bi-oinorganic chemistry covered in the issue include—amongothers—metal entry into cells and active sites, understand-ing metalloenzymes, biomimetic chemistry (success in thisendeavor has the potential not only to provide insights in theworkingmechanisms of the enzymes but also to produce newchemical catalysts for promoting diﬃcult reactions undermild conditions), probing metal ions in cells (this topichas been important for therapeutic, toxic, and pathologicalaspects of medicinal applications of bioinorganic chemistry),and biomaterials. It can be seen from the contributions ofthis special issue that elucidating the structures and reactivi-ties of metallobiomolecules, mimicking and utilizing molec-ular and macromolecular systems at the interface of biologyand inorganic chemistry continue to be fertile research areaswhich promise new discoveries.On behalf of all the authors, and indeed the Greek chem-ical community as a whole, we wish Professor Nick Hadjil-iadis a happy retirement, good health, and many more yearsof scientific success.Last, but not least, we would like to express our gratitudeto (i) the reviewers of the papers for their time to study thesubmitted manuscripts and for their valuable comments,(ii) Dr. Konstantis F.
