Keynote: The Future of Law: Who Will Perform It? Who Will Regulate It?

Abstract

At a time when the profession is encountering major disruption, calls for innovation are becoming more urgent. But barriers posed by the insistence that only lawyers can own, run and deliver services may inhibit innovation. Sharing his intimate knowledge of and experience with the Legal Services Act in the UK, Stephen Mayson addresses the controversial issues that arose there as traditional bar and regulatory restrictions were removed, such as the role that a variety of professionals will play in the future of law, the benefits of multi-disciplinary approaches and services for clients, and the impact that alternative business structures will have on ethics and professionalism.
