Suchinterest and loyalty are more impressive when consideration is given to thefact that many of the members traveled over four hundred miles in makingthe round trip, all at their own expense. Although the By-Laws authorizethe payment of such expenses where the meeting is not in connection with ameeting of the Association, the officers, board members and committee mem-bers for years have waived their right to reimbursement so that funds neededfor the Journal, for speakers of note at the meetings of the Association andother necessary expenses would not be depleted.The Board decided to recommend for passage at the ensuing session ofthe General Assembly the three bills presented to the last session. No changewas made in the procedural bill-the one restoring the rule making power tothe Supreme Court, but a change in the method of appointing some of themembers of the Judicial Council was made. (These bills, as heretofore ap-proved by the Association, will be found in the October, 1932, Indiana LawJournal VIII, pages 52-54.) The integrated bar bill published in the January,1933, Indiana Law Journal VIII, pages 260-263, was approved except for thefollowing changes: In Section 4 the dues for active members is reducedfrom seven dollars to five dollars, and in Section 7 the first three words of thefourth line reading: "from its membership" are omitted.Elsewhere in this issue of the Journal will be found the report of theCommittee on the Administration of Justice of the Indiana State Committeeon Governmental Economy, of which a summary will be given at the mid-winter meeting. Time did not permit the reading, much less a discussion, ofthis comprehensive report by the Board, and it is therefore offered to themembers of the Association at the earliest date possible so that they mayindividually express any criticism to the committee or to those who draft thebills recommended in the report.The program of the mid-winter meeting and the sketch of the attainmentsof the banquet speakers, which appear elsewhere in this issue, speak for them-selves and warrant a large attendence.Sincerely,WILMER T. Fox, President.A Message from the SecretaryYour Secretary dislikes to insert into these otherwise pleasant pages ofthe Indiana Law Journal any mention of delinquent dues but this is the timeof the year when the subject is uppermost in his mind.The financial status of the Association has improved considerably in thelast several years and there are fewer delinquent members at the presenttime than there were at this time last year or the year before. There are,however, a great many members who have not paid their dues for the yearnow ending and quite a few who owe for the preceding year as well. Ifthese members would pay up at this time the Association would be on athoroughly solvent basis, with sufficient funds on hand to carry on confi-dently the rather ambitious program mapped out for 1935.In any voluntary association the problem of collecting dues is most im-portant. The Indiana State Bar Association instead of resorting to "drives"or disciplinary measures has endeavored to make the Association's activities

They serve, among other things, to keep the mem-bers informed of developments between meetings of the Association.The Board of Managers met at Indianapolis on August 4th, and notwith-standing the fact that the meeting was held during the vacation period (suchtime is fixed both by the By-Laws and by the exigencies of the situation),all but four of the sixteen officers and board members were present. TheOctober issue of the Journal has conveyed to you the committee appoint-ments then made. So far as possible, recognition was given in these ap-pointments to members of the Association who have not held previous com-miftee appointments as well as to a number of the younger members of theAssociation.At this meeting a change was authorized in the size of the type and thestyle of binding of the Journal so that (while retaining its former dimen-sions) it corresponds in type and binding with the American Bar AssociationJournal. This change will result in a saving of approximately seventy dollarsper issue without decreasing the amount of reading matter in the Journal;the fewer pages will contain more words. Part of the saving in cost willprobably be used to increase the size of the Journal to compensate for thereduction made during the late depression.An effort is being made to publish in the Journal a larger percentageof articles on subjects that will be of practical value to the members of ourAssociation in the practice of law. The success of this feature is contingenton an adequate supply of such material being available.The mid-winter meeting of the Association will be held at the ClaypoolHotel on Saturday, December 15th, and plans for the meeting will be per-fected at a meeting of the Board of Managers to be held in Bloomingtonon November 3rd. The program will be mailed to each member shortlyafter the receipt of this issue of the Journal. In order that the lawyers ofthe state may be fully advised, Governor McNutt has given permission forthe publication in the Journal of the full report and recommendations of theCommittee on the Administration of Justice of the Indiana State Committeeon Governmental Economy. This will appear in the December issue of theJournal, and the publication date will be advanced so that the members ofthe Association will receive their copies at least a week before the mid-winter meeting.The up-turn in membership that was noted at the annual meeting has con-tinued; won't you please increase the rapidity of our growth by securingthe application of some brother-lawyer?
