SCI. 79(1): 45, 1979Two similar species of leafhoppers, onecollected in Peru in 1943 and another inPanama in 1967, have recently beenstudied. They resemble species of Gy-pona in general appearance but the pro-notum and head are declined and theyappear more closely related to ClinonellaDeLong and Freytag (1971, 1972). Theyare described and placed in the genusArapona, new genus. The types are inthe DeLong collection at Ohio StateUniversity, Columbus, OH.Genus Arapona n. gen.Pronotum declivate, bent sharply justanterior to scutellum, sloping to de-pressed head, which is a continuation ofangled pronotum. Head broadly rounded,semicircular, margin of crown thin, ocellimuch nearer anterior than posterior mar-gin of crown. Male genitalia withparaphyses.Type species—Arapona vallea n. sp.In general appearance, this genus seemsto be related to Gypona but the declivatetype of pronotum and the aedeagus withparaphyses would indicate that it is moreclosely related to Clinonella.Arapona vallea n. sp.(Figs. 1-5)Length of male: 9 mm.; female un-known. Crown broadly rounded, notquite twice as wide at base between eyesas median length. Crown, pronotumand scutellum yellow. Crown with a'•Manuscript received 29 March 1978 and inrevised form 21 June 1978 (#78-15).round black spot half way between eachocellus and basal margin. Pronotumwith a round black spot behind each eyeat half the length of pronotum. Fore-wings white, subhyaline, with brownveins, rather uniformly mottled withsmall pale brown spots.Male genitalia with plates four timesas long as median width, apices rounded.Style with blade serrate on ventral mar-gin near blunt apex. Aedeagal shaftwith four terminal processes, the outerpair short and spine-like, the inner pairlong, extending caudally and slightly di-verging. Paraphyses inflated on basaltwo-thirds, narrowed on apical third andpointed at apex, extending almost toapex of shaft. Pygofer bluntly pointedat apex.Holotype male: Code Prov., El Valle,Panama VI-14-67, D. M. DeLong & C.A. Triplehorn colls, in the DeLong col-lection, Ohio State University.Arapona devisa n. sp.(Figs. 6-10)Length of male: 10 mm.; female un-known. Crown broadly rounded. Colorbuff, crown with a pair of small roundblack spots about half way between ocelliand basal margin. Pronotum with discand basal portion mottled, peppered withsmall irregular black spots; a large blackspot behind each eye at about halflength of pronotum. Scutellum buff,basal angles pale brown.
