SCI. 84(5): 267, 1984The olympia marblewing, Euchloeolympia is hereby added to the Ohio butter-fly list (Albrecht 1982). It was collected atLake Vesuvius in Lawrence Co., Ohio, on28 April 1984. At 1539 EST, I collected amale E. olympia behind campsight 34 onthe southeast side of the lake, the firstspecimen recorded for Ohio. Ten minuteslater I collected a second specimen, also amale, in the same location. Both butter-flies were flying south over a hilltop in aroughly straight line about one meterabove the ground.In the eastern United States the adult ofthe species is found from April to May. Ithas one generation each year and hibernatesas a pupa. The larva is reported to feed onseveral kinds of rock cress (Clench andOpler 1983). The species Arabis laevigata,common throughout unglaciated Ohio,has been reported in Lawrence Co. (Cusikand Silberhorn 1977). E. olympia lives inisolates which range from Ontario, and insouthern Pennsylvania, down the Appala-chian mountains and across West Virginia,Kentucky, Tennessee, parts of Arkansas,Missouri, Iowa, and up through Illinois,Indiana, and into Wisconsin and MichiganManuscript received 21 May 1984 and in revisedform 28 September 1984 (#84-37).(Clench and Opler 1983). Large numbersare reported to be found in the dunes alongLake Michigan and Lake Huron (Wagner1977). In Ohio the butterfly should belooked for in neighboring Scioto and GalliaCo., although the Lawrence Co. specimensrepresent the present Ohio range of theAppalachian isolate.The two specimens of E. olympia, alongwith a third male specimen taken by myson, Bram, on 29 April, are in the privatecollection of the author.ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.
