SCI. 80(6): 282, 1980The common bluegill, Lepomis macro-chirus (Rafmesque), is important as botha forage and game fish. Despite this,few studies have been conducted on theparasites of bluegills in Ohio (Bangham1941, Christian 1972, Hare 1943, Krueger1954). With these exceptions, bluegillshave been neglected from a parasitologicalstandpoint. Our study expands the pres-ent knowledge of bluegill parasites andprovides a summary of all recorded blue-gill parasites (in Ohio). The importanceof knowing bluegill parasites is further in-creased when one considers the greateconomic significance their presence mayhave on fish impoundments, since blue-gills are cultured in the numerous state,federal, and private ponds and reservoirsin Ohio.We collected bluegills by Fyke net,seine, and electro-shocking from 5 bodiesof water. The number collected fromeach site is as follows: Kokosing Reservoir(42), Knox County; Pleasant Hill Reser-voir (31), Richland County; Ross Lake(46), Ross County; Delaware WildlifeArea, ponds 26 (27) and 48 (37), DelawareCounty.All bluegills were collected duringMarch and April 1979 and transported tothe laboratory for routine necropsy. Theintestinal tract of each fish was placed inan individual petri dish containing Ring-er's cold solution. After opening theintestinal tract we searched for and re-moved all parasites. We observed themalive prior to fixation and preparation ofwhole mounts.Manuscript received 17 September 1979 andin revised form 23 May 1980 (#79-48).We recovered 9 different parasites(table 1). One trematode (Posthodiplo-stomum minimum), one cestode (Proteo-cephalus ambloplitis), two acanthoce-phalans (Neoechinorhynchus cyclindratusand Leptorhynchoides thecatus) and 5nematodes (Camallanus oxycephalus, Di-chelyne cotylophora, Spinitectus gracilis,Spinitectus micracanthus, and Spiroxyscontorta). Of the 9 parasites, 3 (Spiroxyscontorta, Dichelyne cotylophora, and Spini-tectus gracilis) had not previously beenrecorded from Ohio's inland waters.The greatest parasite diversity ap-peared in fish taken from the 3 largestand oldest bodies of water: Kokosing Res-ervoir, Ross Lake, and Pleasant HillReservoir (table 2). The prevalence aswell as the intensity of infection waslowest among Dichelyne cotylophora, Spi-roxys contorta, and Leptorhynchoides the-catus (table 1).A summary of the parasites found inOhio bluegills (table 2) shows a total of21 and includes: 8 trematodes, 2 cestodes,2 acanthocephalans, 7 nematodes, and 2copepods.Numerous studies of bluegill parasiteshave been reported and the checklist ofbluegill parasites exceeds 110 in NorthAmerica alone (Hoffman 1967). Thisnumber far exceeds the summary totalof 21 foiind in Ohio bluegills (table 2) andserves as an indicator of the small em-phasis placed on parasites of bluegills inOhio. Bluegills function as intermediatehosts in several life cycles such asProteocephalus ambloplitis, Posthodiplo-stomum minimum, and Spiroxys contorta(table 2) and may be important in theparasitism of other animals.282Ohio J.
