THE ELECTRONIC ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHYL AMINE AND ITS DEUTERIUM DERIVATIVES

Abstract

Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Northeastern UniversityThe absorption spectra of methyl amine, methyl amine-d2d_{2}, methyl-d3d_{3} amine and methyl-d3d_{3} amine-d2d_{2} have been measured photoelectrically in the 1050-2500 {\AA} region with a 1-m monochromator having a 1.0A˚1.0 {\AA} band-width. Only the first two electronic transitions at 2150 and 1740A˚1740 {\AA} show extensive vibrational structure. The deuterium derivatives have aided in the vibrational analysis of the previously unassigned 1740A˚1740 {\AA} band. The electronic structure of methyl amine will be discussed in relation to that of ammonia and other simple alkyl amines
