To improve the under-standing of the mechanism of local damage and adaptationknowledge is required on how external loads are transferredto local loads within the tissue. A 3D continuum model ofthe rat TA muscle (figure 1) was developed to investigate thistransfer of loads during muscle contraction.longitudinal directionkneesuperficialankleFig. 1 Finite element mesh of the continuum model of the TAmuscle of the ratObjectiveThe objective of the present study was to acquire experimen-tal data enabling the validation of continuum models of therats TA muscle.MethodsBecause of the complexity of the sagittal plane model, var-ious numerical output parameters can be evaluated. There-fore, an approach was chosen incorporating different mea-suring techniques to collect an extensive validation data set.These techniques included muscle torque measurements toidentify the parameters of the employed contraction model[1] and displacement and strain field measurements usingvideo analysis of surface markers [2] and MRI tagging [3]. The 3D continuum model enabled goodqualitative prediction of the displacement and strain fields(figure 3,4 and 5). However, large quantitative differenceswere found. Clearly, the model needs further improvement,especially with respect to the geometry.
