Box 513, NL 5600 MB EindhoventuIntroductionDue to economic development within the Europeancommunity the amount of transported load by roadwill grow substantially within the next 15 years. Thisincrease is in conflict with the growing environmentalawareness. Therefore, in order to decrease the emis-sion of CO2 and NOx, there is a need to increase themaximum pay-load, by reducing the net tare weight orby increasing the inner volume, and, at the same time,increase the utilisation of a tractor-semitrailer combi-nation with a multi-functional design.DesignIn the proposed design all objectives are reached witha self supporting box structure, built up from foam-cored sandwich panels. Initially, the design of thesandwich panels is governed by both the requiredstiffness, (core) insulating properties and ruled di-mensions of the semitrailer (Fig. 1). With the sand-wich built up the panel stiffness increases with a re-duction in weight. These reinforcements dividethe local high forces evenly over the panel. On theone hand this increases the complexity of the floorpanel and, consequently the production process. Onthe other hand, an even distribution of loads, makeslocal reinforcements in the wall redundant.Fig. 2 shows the deformed semitrailer loaded with35 tonnes and with a wind load on the side wall. Forclarity half of the model is presented and the front wallis not shown.
