Journal ofManufacturingScience andEngineering Guest EditorialSpecial Issue: Innovations in Materials Forming ProcessesThis special issue of the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Sci-ence and Engineering is devoted to Innovations in MaterialsForming Processes for forming and solid-state joining of metallicand nonmetallic materials, in bulk or in sheet form. Material form-ing via plastic deformation has been widely used for mass produc-tion in the manufacturing industry, which has a significant broaderimpact on society, for example, in both the automotive and aero-space industries. As a response to shifting societal trends, newindustrial technologies and new knowledge are being produced atever-increasing rates.Societal needs and government regulations require vehicles thatare safe, lightweight, and that have reduced fuel consumption andreduced CO2 gas emissions. Moreover, the transportation industryis migrating toward usage of mixed materials. This practice leadsto integrated structures with multimaterials, which are potentiallydissimilar in alloys, grades, gauges, and tempers. As a result, theindustry is motivated to develop energy-efficient and sustainableforming and joining processes to alleviate the current technicalchallenges in making these structures efficiently and cost effec-tively. This has led to significant initiatives in continuous and syn-ergistic development of not only new lightweight materials butalso innovative methods of forming and joining of dissimilarmaterials. The overall industrial scenario is complicated by anincreasing digitalization of supply chains, which reduces averageproduction lots toward mass customization at an alarming rate. Itcalls for adoption of more advanced and flexible processes, suchas those presented herein, in order to address the productionissues.To meet the above needs, new forming and solid-state joiningtechnologies are being developed, along with an increasingknowledge of materials behavior, advanced material models, bet-ter accuracy, and efficient numerical techniques. This special issuecollects papers that can enhance the understanding of materialdeformation processes, expand the area of lightweight materialforming and multimaterial joining processes, development of corre-sponding modeling capabilities, and dissemination of R&D onforming and joining of new materials. Additionally, materialdeformation-based solid-state joining processes are addressed inthis special issue. We are grateful to the Journal Leadership for rec-ognizing the relevance and vitality of this research field and to thecommunity for responding enthusiastically to our call for papers.As a result, this issue contains 15 papers with 12 papers on formingand 3 papers on deformation-based solid-state joining. Novel proc-esses, such as double-sided incremental forming, incremental pro-file forming, laser-based sheet forming, and microblanking, havealso found a home in this collection. We would like to thank theauthors for submitting their work to this special issue, as well as thereviewers whose prompt responses enabled the publication of thisspecial issue in a timely manner.
