Content &amp; Focus: This editorial provides a brief reflection upon the need for counselling psychologists to be both consumers and producers of research. It takes inspiration from the 2014 Division of CounsellingPsychology Annual Conference and elaborates upon a chapter that I have been recently involved in writing for the forthcoming revised edition of the Handbook of Counselling Psychology. In particular, it reflects upon a number of ways that individuals can disseminate their work and argues that not doing anything with it can actually be unethical. The five papers incorporated in this edition are then provided as examples of where people have passed over the publishing threshold to share their work with interested others

Elsewhere it’s also the Division ofCounselling Psychology’s annual conferencegoing on in London. Social media informsme intermittently about the next event ormajor conclusion that’s coming out of theconference (‘Paul Gilbert said this…’, ‘so andso is up next talking about x’, ‘I’m starting tofeel a little tipsy’, etc.). I am, however, sittinginside staring out at all the jubilation atpresent trying to pull together the next (this)edition of Counselling Psychology Review. I havethe papers all sorted now except for a fewminor issues (they’ve been reviewed, revisedand edited for copy) and I need to finish theeditorial. As a consequence I’ve beenthinking about a recent piece of writing thatEdith, Denis and I have been working on forthe forthcoming revision of the Handbook ofCounselling Psychology (a stalwart on BritishCounselling Psychology programme’s readinglists). The focus of our chapter was upon themove from being a consumer of research tobecoming a producer of it.In the chapter mentioned above we aimto describe and discuss a number of arenasin which counseling psychologists find them-selves communicating to interested othersabout their research. We touch upon topicssuch as writing articles, presenting papers atconferences, presenting professional work-shops and using social media to disseminatework. It is this type of focus that brings it tothe fore of my mind today of all days. Let’s start with the act of graduation. Forcounselling psychology trainees this is theculmination of years of hard slog. All thehours of offering and having therapy arecomplete, all the course work requirementboxes have been ticked and, in many cases, ahuge thesis has been produced summarisingyour work and thinking on a particular topic.It’s definitely a time for a celebration.However, although many see it as the end ofsomething, it is also the start of much more.Many people get jobs in different settingsand get swept into a new busy life as a practi-tioner psychologist. In my eyesthis shift of emphasis provides our disciplinewith a large ethical dilemma. How can wejustify asking so many people to share theirstories, entrust us with numerical datasets,etc and then feel satisfied that only two orthree people will ultimately make use of it? It can, therefore, be strongly argued that wehave a duty to try and disseminate our workand to create ‘products’ that help others toaccess this work.This leads me to the research conferencethat is going on as I type and the papers thatI have just shaped with a view to sendingthem to the publishers. The presentationstake on a multitude of forms and cover amassive array of topics. There have beenkeynote talks, paper presentations, work-shops, poster presentations and, something I hadn’t heard of before this conference, a Pechu Kucha (a series of six-minute talksinvolving 20 slides each shown for 20seconds). These contributions were offeredby a wide spread of experienced individuals,with trainees reflecting upon the work theyhave completed in the last year and morerenowned individuals reflecting upon thework they have been conducting for the last20 years. The common thread in this varietyproved to be that each person believed theyhad something to contribute to the widercommunity – possibly even providing the ohso important ‘contribution to knowledge’ sooften talked about in relation to doctorallevel studies.If I move now to consider the papers thatare presented in this edition of CounsellingPsychology Review, the message is much thesame. We have a wide variety of contribu-tions (research papers, theoretical papers,and response papers in the ‘Dialogues andDebates’ section) from individuals from avariety of backgrounds. The overview is asfollows:l ‘UK counselling psychology trainingplacements: Where are we now?’ byChristine E. Ramsey-Wade.l ‘Does Mindfulness help in the treatmentof Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD)? An audit of client experience ofan OCD group’ by Hamilton Fairfax andhis colleagues.l ‘The paradox of self-surrender and self-empowerment: An investigation of theindividual’s understanding of the HigherPower in Alcoholics Anonymous’ by MarcMedina.l ‘The relationship of counsellingpsychology training with CBT: Implica-tions for research and practice’ byGeorgia Konstantinou.l ‘Characteristics of master therapists andthe influence of Carl Rogers: A discussion’by Ross Crisp.As with the variety at the Division conferencereferred to above, the breadth of topicscovered demonstrates some of the broadchurch of interests evident within the coun-seling psychology community in the UK.Once again, however, the common theme isthe desire to share something that is believedto be of interest to others. Hopefully you willagree with them as you make your waythrough this quarterly selection of contribu-tions.
