Summary of Dissertation Recitals Three Programs of Collaborative Piano Music

Abstract

Three collaborative piano recitals were given in lieu of a written dissertation. The first recital, Invocation to Youth, a lecture recital, explored juvenilia and early works by several composers, illuminating the range of ages at which “opus one” and musical maturity occur. The second recital, Brahms vs. Wolf, used the lieder of both composers, including the poems that they both set to music, as a lens through which to view their aesthetic, political, and musical differences. The third recital, 20th Century American Song, was a 25-song survey by 25 composers whose contributions trace the evolution of the genre from its earliest roots to the present.  AMUMusic: PerformanceUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
