The addition of 1,4-dithiane atroom temperature yields the chelated species, [Cp*Ru(1,4-dithiane) OTfl], whereas a similar reaction at 80°C yields thetris-1,4-dithiane complex. When 1,3-dithiane is reacted withCp*Ru+, carbon-sulfur bond cleavage is noted, and twodifferent products are formed. Furthermore, Sabo-Etiennegave no explanation why carbon-sulfur bond cleavageoccurs in the reaction with 1,3- dithiane whereas chelationoccurs in the reaction with 1,4-dithiane. The reaction ofpentamethylene sulfide (pms) was also mentioned, but theresults were inconclusive (Rondon et al., 1994).The reaction of pms with CpRu(PPh3) 2+ yields the sul-fur-bound complex with the pms ligand in the chair config-uration. The reaction of 1,4-dithiane with CpRu(PPIi3) 2+results in the loss of a triphenylphosphine and gives a chelat-ed species similar to the 1,4-dithiane complexes seen bySabo-Etienne (Rondon et al., 1994). The reaction of 1,3-dithiane with CpRu(PPli3) 2+ gives a single sulfur-boundligand with two triphenylphosphines still attached to theruthenium atom (Green et al., 2001). The purpose of the fol-lowing experiment is to explore the coordination chemistryof the mixed heteroatom ring 1,4-thioxane withCpRu(PPh 3)2Cl, i.e., to determine whether the productcoordinates the 1,4-thioxane ligand through the sulfur, theoxygen or if chelation occurs (analogous to the 1,4-dithianecomplexes).Reactions were carried out under a dry nitrogenatmosphere using Schlenk techniques. CpRu(PPh3) 2Cl wasprepared as described in the literature (Bruce and Windsor,1977). Allother reagents were used as purchased withoutfurther purification. The lH NMR spectrum was obtainedonaJEOL GSX 270 MHzNMRspectrometer. Powder pat-terns were obtained on a Rigaku D/MAX-B X-ray powderdiffractometer. The visible spectrum was obtained on aHP8952A diode array spectrophotometer. Elemental analy-sis was performed at Galbraith Laboratories, Knoxville,TN,USA.Synthesis of [CpRu(PPh 3)2O,4-thioxane)JBF 4, 7. UnderN2,0.100 g (0.138 mmol) CpRu(PPh 3)2Cl was dissolved in20 mL of CH2C12,and 0.027 g (0.138 mmol) AgBF4 wasadded to the stirring solution. The mixture was reacted forfifteen minutes, then filtered through celite into a flask thatcontained 20 mL of CH2C12 and 0.1 mL (1.069 mmol) of1,4-thioxane. The solution was concentrated to approxi-mately 10 mL under a N2 stream and then layered withhexanes. Yellow microcrystals were isolated by filtration andwashed with hexanes. Yield =0.068 g, 50.04%. Elementalanalysis, calc. for [CpRu(PPh 3)2(thioxane)]BF 4 -CH-jC^:56.45% C, 4.64% H, 3.28% S; found: 55.44% C, 5.24% H,3.65% S. 1HNMR (5, ppm, inCDCI3): 7.24 (m, 30H), 4.80(s, 5H), 3.72 (s, 4H), 2.58 (s, 4H). Visible spectrum (nm, inCHC13): 360 (e =2384 M^cm"1).The elemental analysis of the yellow crystals supportssingle atom 1,4-thioxane coordination. Upon examinationof the NMRspectrum (Fig. 1), the peaks between 6.96 and7.37 ppm represent the hydrogens of the triphenylphos-phine ligands. The peak at 4.80 ppm corresponds to thecyclopentadienyl hydrogens. The peaks at 3.72 and 2.58ppm represent the hydrogens next to the oxygen and sulfur,respectively. As with previous sulfur-containing compoundsof CpRu(PPh3) 2+,coordination does not cause a large shiftin ligand protons (Park et al., 1994; Green et al., 2001). Thislack of a large shift also indicates that no C-S bond cleavagehas occurred as was reported for 1,3-dithiane. The NMRspectrum of the yellow crystals suggests 1,4-thioxane coor-dination, but single crystals are needed to determine themode of coordination, using X-ray diffraction techniques.Due to the inability to obtain single crystals of 1, pow-der patterns of a series of triflate (CF3SO3) salts were under-taken. Powder patterns were taken on the following fivecompounds: [CpRu(PPh 3)2(l,3-dithiane)]CF 3SO3,[CpRu(PPh 3)(1,4-dithiane)] CF3SO3, [CpRu(PPh 3)2(l,3,5-trithiane)]CF3SO 3, [CpRu(PPh3) 2(pms)]CF 3SO3, and thetriflate salt of [CpRu(PPh3) 2(thioxane)] +, for comparison.The powder pattern for the yellow crystals is not x-ray iso-morphous to those compounds previously characterized.The results are inconclusive at this point.Problems in crystal growth may be due to the reactionof the dechlorinating agent (AgBF4 or AgCF3SO3) and the1,4-thioxane. Two polymeric forms have been isolated fromthe reaction of AgO3SCF 3 with 1,4-thioxane (Buchholz etal., 1996). The polymers contain either terminal or bridgingthioxane ligands. Multiple attempts to recrystallize[CpRu(PPIi3) 2(thioxane)]BF 4 gave very thin plates.
