Goals of the Project. If the archival documents ofNIFS-FSA can be accessed and studied together with thematerials of various other scientiﬁc archives, the values ofthem must be greatly appreciated by researchers of notonly fusion and physical science but also broader rangeof ﬁelds such as history and sociology. It has passedseveral years since the predecessor of this project wasstarted as a collaborative research group, which aims atdeveloping a combined cross-search system of archivaldocuments from several archives of scientiﬁc establish-ments such as KEK and IMS, which are supporting re-search institutes of Sokendai, as well as cooperating andhelping with each other to establish the installation ofsuch archives to the institutes more ﬁrmly. Some activi-ties of the project have been already reported in previosissues of NIFS Annual Reports.Similar activities have been going on in parallel bya diﬀerent group and context, supported by Grants-in-Aid for Scientiﬁc Research of JSPS, “Study of MemorialArchives of Yukawa, Tomonaga, an Sakata and develop-ment of their archival description databases”. Both arebased on the internationally recognized archival descrip-tion standards, EAD (Encoded Archival Description),and some members of them are common to both projects.However, in both cases the work to be done remained;practically working servers, platforms to provide servicesof searching for archival documents, must be preparedand oﬀered to public.Test Server Preparation. For the goals describedabove, two groups have been set up in the NIFS col-laborative research and they can be viewed as a singletask in diﬀerent approaches; one is to use a commerciallyavailable internet service platform for archival descrip-tion and the other is based on a free and open sourcesoftware. The latter is the activity reported by this ar-ticle and the former will be described in a separate re-port. The adopted open source software is called Archon,which is recognized and recommended by SAA (Societyof American Archivists) as a general purpose archivaldata handling software.The system is based on standard free softwaresrunning on Linux (or MS Windows) such as Apache,MySQL, PHP, and this allows the users to import thearchival description data in several forms and methodslike CSV plain text ﬁles, EAD with XML formatted textﬁles as previously worked out by this project, and bytyping in via user interface forms provided by the ar-chon. Once data have been imported it provides brows-ing interface, some administrative tools and instructionsto manipulate the data. Also customization of look-and-feel of the user interface is possible. It may ac-cept data from multiple archives and many collections ofthem, allowing simultaneous search from all the archivesby a single stroke. To summarize cur-rent status of the projects and to discuss future tasks,a mini-workshop “Standardization of Archival Descrip-tion Databases and Practical Issues for Building Pub-lic Servers — from ISAD(G) and EAD to Archon andInfolib” was held at NIFS in February 17, 2012. Theprojects will proceed to set up and polish publicly avail-able servers with more data and better access environ-ments.463§8.
