Comequently,  research  addressinghousehold demographic characteristic and using remotely sensed data in the BrazilianAmazon  is  scamce.  This  paper  presents  an  análysis  of deforestation  at  the  level  ofindividuàl properties  belonging to smàll famers, undertaken by overlaying a propertybomdary  grid  in  a  GIS.    Using  survey  data  combined  vrith  remotely  sensed  dataa,andsat TM),  we  test the  relative  importance  of demographic  structure  and  inarketaccess in explaining pattems of forest clearance occurring on the   properties. We àlsoconsider  the  temporal  dynamics  of  deforestation  events  in  relation  the  householdeconomy.
