Aluminun concentration, pH, bulk density, soíl water storage, hidraulic conductivity,soil compactation, soil management, e1ement toxicity, flooding and nutrient deficiency influence rootdevelopment (Reichardt, 1981; Demattê, 1981). Soil water management depends on rooting depthfor an adequate irrigation water supply and to reduce nutrient leaching and deep percolation.Excavation, monolith, auger hole, profile and rhizotron methods for root analysis are wellknown and each one presents some characteristics that must be taken into consideration to reachresearch proposal. In general, they are laborious, time-consuming, sometimes costly and root samplesize and parameter measured varies between them. Otherwise indirect methods based on soil waterand nutrient content and on tracer radioactivity measured in successive sampling can be related withroot activity. These methods can save time and labor but their success depend on some assumptions(Bohm, ]979; Kopke, 1981). A modification of profile method was presented by Crestana et aI(1994) which consist on root distribution evaluation by images of roots exposed in a profile wall.These images are digitized and processed by SIARCS (Integrated System for Root and SoilCoverage Analysis) that quantifies the root density in a soil profile with relative higher accuracy andlower time consumption.A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the distribution of irrigated maize rootsystem in a soil profile of an alfisol in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, at 126 days after plant emergence. Theroot system was exposed by two trenches dug parallel to the maize rows and 5 em from the plants.Roots were painted to enhance color contrast between them and soil. A 0,2 m x 0,2 m grid system,1 m high and 1 m wide, was set up against the profile wall and each small square area was filmed.Pictiures were digitized by a digitizing board installed in a microcomputer and processed bySIARCS. In each 0,2 m high soillayer root density was obtained. Eight tensiometers at 0,10 , 0,20 ,0,35,0,50,0,65,0,75,0,85, ],00 and 1,15 m depth were installed to obtain matric potential ofsoil water. Eight aluminum access tube were installed to soil water content measurements by neutronprobe at 0,25,0,50,0,75 and 1,00 m depth.At least 70% of roots were presented until 0,40 m depth, with the major concentration atfirst 0,20 m high soillayer. Root distribution decreased until 1 m depth (table 1). Amplitude of soilwater matric potential were greater at 0,10 , 0,20 , 0,35 , and 0,50 m than at 0,65 , 0,75 , 0,85 , 1,00and 1,15 m depth. Negative vaJues of gradient of soil water total potential (upward flux) were morefrequent at 0,20, 0,35 and 0,50 m depth than at 0,65 , 0,75 , 0,85 and 1,00 m depth (data notshown). PercentuaJ contibutions of diffrent soillayers in soil water storage changes were greater at0-0,25 and 0,25-0,50 m depth (table 2).These results showed a good relation between root activity estimation by tensiometer andby neutron probe measurements and root distribution analysis by profile method aided by digitalimage processing. A concentração de alumínio, pH, densidade global, armazenamentode água, condutividade hidráulica, compactação, manejo, toxicidade de elementos, encharcamento edeficiência de nutrientes influenciam o desenvolvimento das raízes(Reichardt, 1981; Demattê, 1981).O manejo de água do solo depende da profundidade de enraizamento para um adequado suprimentode água pela irrigação e para reduzir a lixiviação de nutrientes e a percolação profunda.Os métodos da escavação, monolito, trado, perfil e rizotron para análises de raízes são bemconhecidos e cada um apresenta algumas características que devem ser levadas em consideração parase alcançar o propósito da pesquisa. Em geral, eles são trabalhosos, consomem tempo, as vezes sãocustosos e o tamanho da amostra de raiz e parâmetro medido variam entre eles. Por outro lado, osmétodos indiretos baseados no teor de água e nutrientes no solo e no rastreamento da radioatividademedida em sucessivas amostragens podem ser relacionadascom a atividade radicular. Esses métodoseconomizam tempo e trabalho mas suas aplicações dependem de algumas suposições (Bohm, 1979;Kopke, 1981). Uma modificação do método do perfil foi apresentado por Crestana et ai (1994) queconsiste na avaliação da distribuição de raizes por imagens de raízes expostas no perfil do solo. Essasimagens são digitalizadas e processadas pelo SIARCS (Sistema Integrado para Análise de Raízes eCobertura do Solo), que quantifica a densidade radicular em um perfil de solo com precisãorelativamente maior e menor consumo de tempo.Um expeirmento de campo foi conduzido para avaliar a distribuição do sistema radicular demilho irrigado em um perfil de terra roxa estruturada latossólica em Piracicaba, SP, Brasil. aos 126dias após a emergência das plantas. O sistema radicular foi exposto por duas trincheiras dispostasparalelamente e à 5 em das plantas de milho. As raizes foram pintadas para realçar o contraste de corentre elas e o solo. Um grid de 0,2 m x 0,2 m, em uma armação de 1 x 1 m, foi colocada contra operfil de solo e cada uma das pequenas áreas foi filmada. As imagens foram digitalizadas por meio deuma placa digitalizadora instalada em um microcomputador e processadas pelo SIARCS. Em cadacamada de solo de 0,2 m de espessura a densidade de raiz foi obtida. Oito tensiômetros aO, 1°,0,20,0,35 , 0,50 , 0,65 , 0,75 , 0,85 , 1,00 e 1,15 m de profundidade foram instalados para se obter opotencial mtricial da água no solo. Oito tubos de alumínio de acesso foram instalados para medidasdo teor de água no solo por sonda de nêutrons a 0,25,0,50,0,75 e 1,00 m de profundidade.Pelo menos 700/0 das raizes estiveram presentes até 0,40 m de profundidade, com a maiorconcentração nos primeiros 0,20 m. A distribuição radicular decresceu até 1 m de profundidade(tabela 1). A amplitude do potencial matricial foi maior a 0,10 ,0,20 , 0,35 e 0,50 m que a 0,65 ,0,75 , 0,85 , 1,00 e 1,15 m de profundidade. Valores negativos do gradiente do potencial total daágua no solo (fluxo ascendente) foram mais frequentes a 0,20,0,35 e 0,50 m que a 0,65,0,75 ,0,85e 1,00 m de profundidade (dados não apresentados). No balanço hídrico a profundidade deenraizamento deve ser considerada para uma boa estimativa da evapotranspiração e o processamentode imagens pode permitir uma análise quantitaiva da distribuição radicular com um maior número derepetições.
