However, e cientprediction of Vcmax using the spectroscopy approach acrossspace and time is still lacking. Here, we leverage previousstudies which have successfully linked leaf spectroscopy toleaf Vcmax and leaf age respectively, with a speci c goal toexplore the potential use of leaf spectroscopy as a generalmeans to rapidly estimate and monitor temporal changes inVcmax. Here we address three questions: (1) whether thereexists a convergent relationship between leaf Vcmax andspectroscopy across tropical forest sites, species, leaf age, andgrowth environments, (2) how well can the spectroscopyapproach predict temporal variation in leaf Vcmax (or Vcmax-age relationship) compared with the eld observed Vcmax-agerelationship, and (3) how do spectroscopy-derived Vcmax-agerelationships vary across species and growth environments?To address these questions, we used eld data collected intwo tropical evergreen forests in Panama (n=18 species) andone in Brazil (n=6 species). These data include detailed eld29/08/2017 2017 ESA Annual Meeting (August 6 -- 11)https://eco.confex.com/eco/2017/webprogram/Paper63083.html 2/2measurements of leaf age, full range re ectance spectroscopy(i.e. 350-2500 nm), Vcmax (derived from leaf gas exchangemeasurements), and growth environments (i.e. sun vs. shade).Results/ConclusionsOur results suggest that leaf re ectance spectroscopy canaccurately predict leaf Vcmax at the fully expanded age status(or mature leaf age class, 3-5 months old), across tropicalforest sites (R2=0.7, p<0.001). However, this single-agespectra-Vcmax relationship requires recalibration when it isapplied to broader demographic classes (i.e. young and old ageclasses). Our next step will be to explore whether a singlespectra-Vcmax model can be developed for leaves spanningboth leaf life cycles and growth environments. We will use thispotential generalized spectra-Vcmax relationship to furtherexplore how well the spectra-derived Vcmax and leaf age (orspectra-derived Vcmax-age relationship) can be used to capturethe temporal trajectories of Vcmax across leaves’ entire lifecycles.
