Crop sites inc1uding plantations require high input of chemical productsdue to the high diversity of pests and diseases. The large increase of agricultural activities in thisarea, inc1uding the use of pesticides, requires urgently the adaptation of existing test methods fortropical regions to assess the ecotoxicological hazard potential of pesticides. Therefore, in thisproject such tests deterrnining the effects of such chemicals on soil macrofauna species anddecomposition processes under tropical conditions will be developed.In detail, a fungicide (carbendazim) and an insecticide (lambda-cyhalothrin) were chosen as modelsubstances. The earthworrn Eisenia fetida (well known from European compost heaps but alsooccurring in Amazonia) and the peregrine isopod Porcellionides pruinosus were selected as testspecies. A "tropical" artificial soil, based on OECD recommendations, and an Amazonian field soil(terra preta) serve as test substrates. Acute and chronic tests are perforrned in the laboratory, usingmortality, biomass development and reproduction as measurement endpoints. In addition, theeffects of the two pesticides on site-specific oligochaete and isopod species and on organic matterbreakdown will be deterrnined in terrestrial microcosms (intact soil cores) and in the field (anabandoned rubber plantation) in order to extrapolate data gained in standardised tests to the fieldsituation. Since the two pesticides have been used in Europe for many years, these results can becompared with those from temperate regions.This work is part of the German-Brazilian SHIFT project (ENV 52/2) which started in October 2000. its objective isthe development ofrecommendations for a sustainable land use.101
