Los motines carcelarios han sido un fenómeno social y político que se han caracterizado por ser violentos, dejando muchas veces víctimas, muertos, heridos, rehenes y daños en la infraestructura. En este sentido, este trabajo quiere aportar investigativamente al campo de la ciencia política y el penitenciarismo, señalando los factores que explican y ayudan a comprender, el por qué se generan los motines carcelarios. Por consiguiente, y a partir de la teoría de las revoluciones centrada en el Estado, el estudio revisará algunos casos de motines carcelarios en Colombia durante el periodo de 1990 a 2012, con el objetivo de comprender los factores que contribuyen al desarrollo de los motines carcelarios en Colombia. En este sentido, para lograr este objetivo se seleccionó el método comparado como el mejor camino para comprender este fenómeno.Prison Riots are social and political phenomenon that has been characterized as violent, with terrible consequences to prisoners, staff administration, prison officers and infrastructure (dead, wounded and hostages people). In this way, this research pretends to contribute in the field of prison sociology and political science, trying to answer the question: which are the causal factors that explain prison riots in Colombia. Therefore, and following the Theoretical frameworks state-centered theory of revolution, this study will review the most important cases of prison riots in Colombia from 1990 to 2012, with the aim to understand what are factors contribute and not contribute to the development of prison riots in Colombia. In order to achieve this goal, we are going to use the comparative method like the best path to understand in a holistic way this phenomenon
